Diesel Purge
It was nice and a sunny 38F mid morning and decided to do the ole' purge. Went a bought a 500 ml beverage with a larger than normal cap. Got some 5/16" ID vinyl tubing yesterday from Home Depot, and the Liqui Moly DP from the import parts store ($10 ea). Drilled two 5/16" holes on cap, connected one tubing in to primary fuel filter and other tubing in to return line at the spin-on fuel filter.
Poured bev contents in to glass to drink later . Cleaned container and dried thoroughly. Filled it with LM DP. Inserted tubing into container thru cap holes. Supply down low and return up high. Started engine, revved a few times and left idling till only about an inch of DP was left. The injectors on my 85 300D must be fairly clean. Either that or the LM DP was not that effective . In the end the fuel did not discolor much nor where there any particles in the container nor in the pri filter. I also could not tell if the car ran smoother. Neither could Toby who even wore his water polo cap which helps him hear and see better

Every six months according to Russell @ Diesel Giant. I sure hope my results are better! I'll be using a different product though. Also have to figure out where the feed and return lines are on this "Medusa". The lines are brittle, prolly should be swapped out as well.

Purge results
When I did mine, the excess fluid was black, results were noticeable. I will do another in a few weeks, with any luck there will be less to clean. I think results from diesel purge vary by engine, some guys report no change, others get big results.
427L88 : Fuel lines are cheap, the quality ones will last a very long time.

I dont think Diesel Purge will do anything if there's nothing to be purged. I drove mine around the block and revved it real hard for a while till there was almost nothing left in DG's purge bottle. I did notice a fair amount of black smoke comming out under full throttle but it didnt seem to make much difference to the way mine ran. It was already pretty smoothe, good power and clean fuel. I changed the fuel filters at the same time but didn't notice any deposit. Seems like we have good fuel around me. So I guess yours might be in good shape anyway.
- Peter.

Bottom line is you will never know if the DP has cleaned the injectors or not. So you go thru the hassle every 6 months or so. Instead of that, I took my injectors out at 100K, had them tested, 5 passed, 1 failed. After it was cleaned, the last one passed with good pop off pressure and spray pattern. $70. So, for that money, I know it is good for another 100K. How much in DP will let me know for sure that the injectors are clean and that it is not a SWAG as to the condition?

I called a diesel truck shop. They serviced Bosch injectors. Told me it was about $55 for testing pop off pressure and spray pattern. More to clean it.

I may have to go that route. Coldstart is ATROCIOUS and even being a diesel noobie ,there is no way the clanging metallic noise is proper. Something is amiss with the injectors.
Pull them all and have them tested? Replace all the clearlines? I'm dyin to drive this car! Tobybul, doin' some late season steelheadin' today, before the 4/1 trout opener and the crowds. |

Have you tried valve adjustment? This really made the engine run smoother and quieter. Pull them all and have them tested? Replace all the clearlines? I'm dyin to drive this car! Not sure about this. Maybe you can elaborate on your symptoms. Tobybul, doin' some late season steelheadin' today, before the 4/1 trout opener and the crowds Around here we are just starting. Haven't decide which river to go to yet. We jsut had a big melt down and most of the rivers are raging. If am lazy to drive, I just go downtown and fish the Grand River.

What exactly is diesel purge?
Someone told me that the fuel tank gets really weird after a while with algae, etc., and needs purged from time to time, because the stuff turns into a solid, and reduces the amount of fuel you can put in the tank.
Then someone else told me if you use the car as your daily driver, you don't have to worry about it because the fuel is being sloshed around as you drive, and burned off through the engine; only if your car sits for a long time, do you need to use a "bomb" to clean the fuel tank. But now I'm reading that diesel purge is for the injectors. I used something some months ago to quiet the engine down a bit, the MB specialist shop sold me something from "BG Products" I think it was. They said to put some in your fuel tank once a year. Is that a diesel purge? I think it was for cleaning the injectors. Thanks, jeff 1991 300d, 103k |

For that sort of stuff, you might need a biocide to clean it off. Not really. If you are going to use DP, you should run it off a seperate tank so that the injectors get the full effect. I have used BG products when they hook it directly to the injectors. Again, you will never know if that dose was enough or not. I have done the BG thing on a gas engine and taken the injectors out for testing. A couple in the batch of 8 were still dirty. I gave up on those snake oils and just take the injectors out ever so often and have them tested. That way I know for sure without wasting money on the snake oil injector cleaners.

Ha, we stop fishing when the season for trout opens up on 4/1. Fishing the lake tribs to the first dams is kosher all winter.
Well, I thought it was because I fired her up yesterday with no regard to the glowplug light. Stupid gasser move. Anyway, fired it this am, starts right up!, but there is a slight quiet normal diesel sound in the background.... and a loud clanging in the fore... sounds like one jug has an intermittent "CLANG". Pulled it back in the garage and shut it off. Hope I didnt damage it driving it home 400+miles yesterday. I went to order the valve wrenches from Russell @ DG and he said the 95 610 doesnt require a valve adjustment. If there is an adjustment procedure, I'd like to know about it. None given in the factory manual. Doing the same thing I'd do to my old solid cammed engine if it ran afoul, cutting the old oil filter up/ checking for metal, and popping the valve covers off to check the cams. Purge is on the way, but dang man, if purge take careof this, it'll cure cancer. An injector hanging up will make a helluva racket like this? Bad injector in the mix is my hope. Not that I'm dying to disassemble the top end of the engine, but it seems I need access to the injectors. Its not likely that low fuel pressure would do this is it, since I havent changed out the fuel filters yet? (new filters usually cut flow more for a bit anyway) . Remove washer bottle and intake next to gain access to injectors? BTW, I'm not concerned with the fuel tank in this one. 220K on a '95, it didnt sit around much!
