1987 mercedes benz 300 sdl 280k well maintained. Driving down road car shut off. Trouble shooted fuel filters and gas tank. After cleaning and refilling gas tank car started and ran for about 5-10 minutes. Ran rough and would not restart. Never owned a deisel and have no idea where to go from here. Any bright ideas? This is a turbo model.

By trouble shooting do you mean replaced both filters? When you cleaned "fuel" tank did you check the tank strainer? Did you check your vent line from fuel tank?

Havent checked vent line. Would you know where that is located on the tank? Is this a vacuum line or strictly vent?

When it stalls is it like someone turning the key off or does it stumble a bit?

You did fill the tank with diesel, didn't you?

At first it stalled. Car was very sluggish before trouble thats why we figured fuel filters or maybe pump. Started car and it ran rough for about 5-10 minutes and would not restart. Did not stall 2nd time I turned car off to see if it would restart. No such luck. It hasnt started since.

OK so the problem (now) is it won't start. Have you cracked open an injector line to see if you are getting fuel while someone cranks the engine (work backwards from injectors)

Probably air in the fuel system. Look and see if there is fuel in the small, inline filter leading to the injection pump. If fuel is present, then remove the spin-on cannister fuel filter and fill it completely with diesel, transmission fluid or clean Mazola before reinstalling. Then get ready to spend some quality time with your car...it will take a LOT of cranking to purge the system. Don't crank continuously or you will overheat the starter. Crank for 15 seconds or so and let it cool for a minute. Repeat until engine starts.

If no joy after several tries, come back to us and report.

all fillters are full, have not opened a injector

when i took out the tank it was clean, fillters were not the issue, so im still wondering what the first issue is had to be. i had to tow it home.

Car was running sluggish and stalled out. Would not restart so we had it towed home. Called a friend that said to check both fuel filters and to clean the tank. When we took the tank out screens were clean. This led us to believe that the tank wasnt the issue. Both filters were replaced so we dont think that is the issue either. After that we put 6 gallons of diesel and had a hard time starting but it did start but ran rough for about 5-10 minutes.

disconnected fuel line at injector no fuel comes out when we try to start engine
