Wink The last ride of Scar. He is donating his organs so others might live....

OK, there may be a little melodrama in the title, but Scar is donating his engine so that the HitMan's 240 might live. I like the idea of having a spare engine laying around, but I feel better about getting another car running that is actually road worthy.
I pulled Scar down by the garage to start on the engine removal, but went ahead and drove him up the road and back first. It was very funny, I was on my way back and about an 1/8 mile from my house when a car came around the bend in the road behind me. What must they have been thinking to see a car driving down the road with the rear bumper darn near in the back seat! I put on my blinker out of habit, but there isn't even a light assy. left on that side.
This engine sure does idle smoothly, and drove fine down the road considering what it is wrapped up in. Radiator appears to have a hole in it, so no spare there.
I guess I will see if anybody wants the manual tranny and all components associated with it. I like having the wagon automatic, so I won't need it. I need to find a way to get my Bundts and tires from it when I haul it off, or have it hauled off.
So, just a dumb little thread that I will chronicle Scar's last days. I'll let the HitMan take it from there.......

You said in the the other thread that the sunroof is manual? I'll take it.

The interior color looks close engough to mine. Whats it's interior code (Or VIN)?

Thumbs up

Well this is what happened to my 240 to necessitate a new motor. My 616 toast?

The mileage is near 300k on Scar, but that motor sounds smooth! When we picked it up, it had been sitting for quite some time and just fired off.

I'm pretty excited that I'll be dorking around in the 240 within a few weeks. I'm going to reseal the motor, new clutch, etc.

Pics of the swap will follow

I have had 4 MB's with manual sunroofs, and every last one of them had the fabric loose at the back of the T-handle. I'm guessing that is common?
It was pitch dark outside, but these pics are the best I can do tonight. Why do I stay up after midnight on a work night. Oh, that's because I'm always on here.....

It must be common. It was loose in the exact same spot on my TD as well. Probably just how the fabric is stretched with no anchor point on the back of the latch.

If your converting a power sunroof to manual you can avoid this problem. Use the headliner from the power sunroof and cut a circle out of the headliner right where the handle goes. You will also have to cut a section of the liner forward of this hole to get the chrome piece to recess properly, but cut as little as possible.

You simply can't imagine how many pm's I've received concerning parts from Scar. I had to go into panic private message box maintenance. My memory is so poor I had a lot of saved messages, and it filled up fast!
I'm doing my best to answer everybody back, and on duplicate requests I will simply defer to the one who inquired first.
Poor little Scar didn't have that much to offer in the first place, as it's engine was the main draw....
I will attach pics of the front 1/4 panels. They are not very good. Actually, they have rot behind bumper area, but the part back behind tires is really good. Go figure. Hood has been spoken for, as has manual sunroof. Tranny is pending.....

Today I was going to remove the drive shafts and maybe the shifter. I pulled the exhaust system [in one large long piece] and then somehow shifted work to inside the car. {wandering around in a state of OCD I guess }
I pulled the console and the dash. The dash of a 240 is much different than a 300D or 300TD. Those manual controls like to hang on! My piece behind dash that hold the 3 knobs is not broken as many get, but it appears to be riveted in place. I feel a drill in my future.....
Got the ignition cylinder pulled, front driver seat of course, which is pretty much crap. Good hardware for where the seats attach to the floor, as sometimes those get rusted.
I sure do enjoy disassembling these cars. There is an odd relaxation to it. I don't think it would be the same at the junk yard. My trips to the bathroom are shorter. [and cleaner!]
Darkness and mosquitoes chased me inside.
Jimmy

I'm so sorry about Scar, Jimmy.

Please take a look at my loss today, in this neighboring thread. My beloved 300SDS equally rear-ended!
My SDS sadly rear-ended!

Can you believe how well these cars do in a collision? The rear passenger door closes just fine, no ill effects from the hit [it is just open in above pic due to missing latch assy] And neither rear window shattered. Amazing....
Oh, something else wild about Scar, even with the rear end damage, the rear bumper isn't even bent or twisted! Just has a scrape....

Car didn't come with any shocks, which was a huge surprise when I backed it off the trailer.....
And with the damage, the right brake line tore into the outer boot section, mostly due to the fact that without shocks the car bounced down onto the boot.
The other side doesn't have much life left in it at all, to be honest. Wouldn't be worth your shipping and the cost of replacing rear end oil.....

becker radio

Jimmy,

By chance do you have the OEM becker radio & does it work? I might convert mine back to stock since I have satelite now and don't use CDs much anymore.

Not sure if that is the same radio that was in my 84 300SD - mine had the paddles in the bottom corners (not knobs)

Hey Shell,
It had a nice hole right where the radio would go.
I got a nice original Becker 612 for my wagon (thanks HitMan), and am also looking for one for the Squash. I'm with you, I want original back.
And..... if the cassette works, you can get a $9.00 adapter and run your Ipod/MP3 player through it.....
