What's my car worth?
It's a 1976 300D 115. I am third owner. Second owner was my uncle who purchased it from a Merc dealer in southern california. Car spent the rest of it's life in California. Mercedes rebuilt and installed engine about 100K ago. Rebuilt auto Tranny. Overhauled A/C system under a year ago with new compressor, condensor etc. Charged with R-12. 4 brand new Toyo tires. Interior is clean, had new headliner installed and appears to have front and rear windshield rubber replaced at same time. Paint is O.K., but faded a little on the hood and trunk. Has original factory am/fm stereo that works.I have every single receipt since my Uncle has owned it. Serviced at the same Mercedes shop for well over 20 years.
What it needs- Front brakes. Shocks all around. Possibly some suspension components. Starts easy, runs strong. Rides good but feels a little "squishy" on the highway that's why I'm thinking shocks and maybe some front end work. Don't need the car so haven't put any work into it except the set of tires. So, what's a reasonable price to ask for? |

If rust free $4000, around here anyway.
I should move to Texas if cars like this go for peanuts.

Ask 2,950.00 and leave some wiggle room-- you'll get the 2,500.00 it's worth that way, and maybe a little extra.
w115 cars are not glamorous, they aren't modern, they aren't large or stately-- they're just weird old cars to most people, especially with a diesel. They're worth less as a result. This is the 'red-headed stepchild' of the Benz line(right in front of the w201-- NOONE wants those anymore) and servicing them is a pain compared to just about every other Benz. Receipts do help the value, but the benchmark is set low I'm afraid. You'll be adding your good points and bonuses to the flat 1,500.00 Jimmy mentioned, so do you feel a 100k mile 'new' engine is going to impress a potential buyer enough to have them plunk down 4,000.00? Will receipts? The rebuilt transmission and a/c aren't really bonuses, as they're required to work for the car to even fetch 2,000.00! This is a conundrum that most Benz owners will face whenever they sell their babies. You're either going to list the car at what you *think* it is worth and hang on to it for a while(unless a sucker comes along, then you have a question of morals) or you list it at a fair price and sell it quickly, but maybe at a loss. Pick which you like better.

I like that
I support INEON 100% in his view of it. Start it on the high side - you can always come down. If you think it is worth more then everyelse, you will wind up owning it forever. As far as diesels go, it is not a hot number. If you want top dollar, it has to look and drive perfect. Sounds a little less then perfect to me.

For a bench mark, a bit over a year ago when I was looking to buy my first MB there was a W115 240D for sale in the Seattle area. No rust, stick shift, Green trunk lid on cream body. It sold for $3500 before I could go look at it.
