Overall questions about 240d's
 

Hello. I, as my user name says, have a 1981 300sd. I like the speed of the 300sd, but I hate all of the extra "features" that are lacking on a 240d (I hate working on vacuum issues, and all the automatic features).

I found someone who has a 1982 240D that has 30k miles on the rebuilt engine.

I do not care about speed (well I do, I dont want to get into an accident because its too slow) but I mean I am willing to go from a 300 turbo to a 240 non turbo.

Anyway, the guy is asking "between 2500 and 3000" dollars for this 240D - and said that he may be willing to trade my 300sd for it.

My questions are -

Are they truely much less maintenance than a 300sd?

What kind of fuel economy do they have?

Will I be horribly unsatisfied with the speed? ( I had a geo metro at one time, how fast are these compared to the metro? lol

Do you think a 300sd in decent condition is worth trading for a 240D with a rebuild 30k miles ago?

There are less things to go wrong on a 240D, but there could be more to fix (at first at least) depending on maintenance that the previous owners have done.

Mine got over 30 MPG, and up to 34 on highway road trips...Much better than the 21 I get with a 617 turbo in the same body.

I never had much of a problem with the lack of speed. They are comparable to a VW bus. Never driven a geo, but I expect they are a bit faster. :D

Depends...if they are in similar condition and you can verify the rebuild was from a reputable place (metric motors) then I would think so.

I love my 240D and will never sell it. But it does have it's limitations. I will be buying another Mercedes, probably some form of 300 because I dont like running the 240D for long periods on the highway. They are certianly simpler to work on and a recently re-built motor could be a very good thing - assuming it was done well. Mine has lasted 200000 on a rebuild and seems to go very nicely. My mpg used to be 31 but have recenly fallen to 27-29. Hopefully that's only because of winter diesel.

i would almost say that the geo accelerates a little faster...
but the benz does it in style, if u dont mind the smaller car with less pick up the the 240d is gret!, just make sure its a stick shift,haha:)

I would advise you not to buy the 240 D! Keep your 300sd, but send me the name and phone number of the guy with the 240 D, so I can call him to see if I might buy it!:rolleyes::pirate::greedy::)
