She finaly runs.... but ! Smokes alot

I finaly wrapped up the engine swap in my 85 300D last weekend. I drove it for about 20 minutes and it ran pretty good, it smoked a little bit but wasnt too bad. Yesterday I cranked her up and let it idle for about 45 minutes while I was thinkering with the AC. I went for a drive today it was really slow and it smoked alot too. It's much much slower than when I first got it running last weekend.

I also noticed thet the little rubber hoses that connect the injectors together are leaking a little bit. Anybody knows what type on hose I need for that and where I can get it?

FYI: The engine that's in there was in my wrecked 300d and ran 100% perfect before I pulled it out.

Another bug that I guess I need to work out is that when I turn the ignition off, it takes a few seconds before the engine shuts down. Before it would shut off instantly.

Hopefully I will be able to get rid of all of these problems and be able to daily drive it soon.

Letting a diesel idle for 45 minutes isn't really a good idea, I would expect a little smoke after that. Maybe a good Italian tune up and a shot of Molly Purge will help if it persists.

You can get return line here at "parts" http://www.peachparts.com/header/msheader.gif

You may need a vacuum shut off switch. Remove the brown vacuum line from the switch on the aft end of the IP and apply vacuum with the engine running, if it doesn't shut off, switch is bad. If not get back for more ideas.

2 year old fuel.....you probably have a petri dish like culture growing in there.
Any chance of pumping the tank out and starting with fresh fuel? Keep a couple of fresh fuel filters handy! The one that is in there is surely going to clog and fuel starve the engine if its not already happening.

I thought diesel fuel could last for up to 50 years.

How many miles before I burn it all up ?

if u drive the piss out of it for a while, it should clean things right out, might want to add an algae killer or something similar, carry extra fuel filter in the trunk and top of with fresh fuel, and u should be good to go...

Yes, but diesel is hydrophilic...it has an afinity for water and can be contaminated enough through contact with humid air over time that certain types of microbes/bacteria can start to grow in it.

They used certain types of bacteria to digest the fuel oil spills along the coast
Remember the Exxon Valdez? Part of that clean up treatment....which is on going....involved bacterial break down of the fuel.

Run the engine out of a bottle of fresh fuel like a diesel purge and see if it still smokes

Can I tell if my fuel is contaminated just by removing the filter and looking inside of it ?

I drove it for 70 miles today and it's still the same. Plenty of Italian tune ups.

The car is really sluggish right off the line and smokes A LOT ! It's so bad that people follow me from afar and I get plenty of strange looks. The smoke is really bad. The cloud is thick and bigger than the car when I look back in my mirror. I'm scared I may get pulled over Once the car as reach 40mph and I ease off the throttle, no smoke can be seen.

Another weird thing is that the car seems to run better at part throttle than full throttle. It even seems to accelerate faster at 3/4 throttle than at full throttle. Very odd.

On the interstate it runs fine, cruising at 60mph. But if I want to pass a car it will smoke untill I ease off the throttle.

Jon,
Black smoke or grey smoke? If its black try bypassing the overboost solenoid. Sounds like its stuck open. Otherwise you have leak in the alda (once again if the smoke is black). Do you still have the old turbo? I might buy it from you I'm convinced the one I have is a crappy rebuilt.

it could also be bad timing, late timing could be dumping fuel in too late in the stroke, resulting in incomplete burn. grey smoke would show this way.
start with fresh filters.

Sluggish a part throttle, dead at full throttle until the turbo comes up, inky black smoke so bad the car behind can vanish in the smoke?

Your EGR is stuck open. Absolutely incredible black smoke!

Smoke is black.

The whole drivetrain was swapped from a car that ran perfectly. I mean everything under the hood is from a car that ran flawlessly. So I reaally dont know why it's running this way.

And yes I have a turbo with 180k miles on it.
