New stereo in an 1980 300D; Does it need rewiring or not.
Have old Becker radio. Have own new sony cd/mp3 etc with harness.
When to Al and Ed's 2 stores. store 1: Have to rewire; old amp; there would be no sound and fader/balance would not work. $80 store 2: Don't have to rewire; there would be sound from all 4 speakers but fader/balance would not work $70 Prefer to rewire to make them work $130 Who is telling the truth. What would be considered a good deal? |

It isn't hard to wire a radio.
4 wires to the speakers(in pairs) one wire to the original switched power supply, one wire to the battery to retain radio memory. You'll have to pull the console, the rear seat bottom and back and the rear parcel shelf. It'll take an afternoon, but if you value your trim and plastics-- you'll do it yourself and not allow a 'quickie' installer near your vehicle.

if u bought the correct wiring harness, all u should have to do is just plug some stuff right in, or u might have to splice some things together. i bought my stuff from crutchfield and they gave me the correct wiring harness for free!

You might want to checkout the Audio forum, but my personal belief is that if you didn't rewire it then it should probably either be rewired or at least stripped down to the original wiring and then retrofitted from there.
The fader should be bypassed. You do not want to use it, all modern stereos have a fader built-in that does a better job than the original MB fader.
