i know you guys probably can't answer this but i'm just sort of talking out loud. so if i have a bill of sale, proof of insurance from my insurance and i'm just driving home, do i have to get the one trip fee from every state ? or just CA ?
The legal situation seemed unclear to me when I did it. In Colorado, I could drive the car home on a bill of sale. I wasn't sure if this rule applied if I bought the car in another state so I bought the one trip permit in CA. I have no idea what kind of legal limbo I was in, in AZ and NM.

is a california title called a "pink slip" ? (is it pink)
The California automobile titles are called pink slips. The smaller older ones were pink, and the newer ones are pink/green.

All the DMV offices in California are closed on Sundays, I'm sorry to say.

Is it possible the seller can swing by his Calif. DMV and grab one of those trip permits for you tomorrow? There's got to be a way to get this small rock out of your road. I would be glad to go to a DMV here for you tomorrow and get you a form, if I could but dont have a fax machine for you or a way to get it to you. FEDEX overnight or something? We want you to clear this up!

More research

You are probably going to have to check this with every state's DMV. I've seen "drive away" permits in the rear windows of cars in transit. This may the solution as others have stated with regards to getting out of California. The seller seems pretty solid. Maybe it would be easier to just ship it (this will be anathema to most on this list for obvious reasons).

To the best of my knowledge and experience the temporary permit is considered a one way trip to destination. No matter where it is. I have purchased cars in the states and travelled across many states with the one permit. Even stopped once for having the permit displayed in a non compliance position in another state. Including canadian provinces. Also the customs people consider it valid from the originating state. The permit was legal. We basically call them transit permits up here.

i'm checking on the one trip permit as soon as CA opens up.

another question about oil consumption. is there an expected amount of oil consumption for a car this age ? i think the owner said it might take a little oil after a 1000 miles. i should pick some up before i leave too.

I'd anticipate that oil consumption could be higher at sustained interstate highway speeds.

A quart would be good...

I wouldn't buy a case or anything - in an emergency you will be able to find oil at any truck stop.

You will be refueling every 3-400 miles so you should be able to gauge it well before a quart is used.

Good luck.
