Nice trip. That's the same color and interior as mine. I'd love to know how it handles the Rockies. Some gloves and a couple of throw away towels in case you need to change the fuel filters (which should'nt be necessary unless your're unlucky). Your primer pump will likely spray a copious quantity of fuel all over the place if it's the original variety.

thanks jimb. i had to go back and re-read what you said about this. i'm not sure what your are talking about. (speeding ticket ? not possible with a 240, i've heard!)

stuff on a plane... i think if i check in luggage they won't think i'm trying to sabotage the airline with a 22mm wrench ! i'll bring most of what you guys have recommended but maybe not the tire chain (cause i don't have one).

thats an awesome trip, Im really, really jealous! I hope to take my 300D down I70 someday. My favorite ride in the whole country, maybe because it usually means Im going to ski at Vail :-)

I didnt see this mentioned yet, but, buy and bring a small shovel for possible snow removal or whatever. can really be a lifesaver.

you wont need the chains, if it is nasty through Vail pass on I70: STOP and spend the night somewhere before the pass - like in Minturn,CO. it is NOT worth going through there on your nice 240D during a storm. too many things can go wrong...just wait it out and proceed slowly, and enjoy the ride!

I don't think the steep climbs should be any big deal, but you'll probably be down to second gear at the top. Vail Pass has a steeper climb eastbound.
The chain law rarely applies to autos in Colorado unless you are pulling a trailer.
second that.. used to run my old '77 vw bus over the passes living in vail, and pretty highlarious let me tell ya.
making the swing through the rockies would definitely add a day to your travels, depends what your looking for..
sure as heck cant say colorado isnt a good time. edit:minturn is a cool town, used to live up the road from there in redcliff.

I was just suggesting that since you will be bringing a just-purchased California car through several states, that you ought to be sure you are "legal on the road". Call your insurance agent to see if they can be of help. Maybe they can fax you a binder policy or a letter or something to have with you when you are driving back home, as proof of insurance. At least the car has it's orange 2008 California tags on it (Owner in Santa Cruz Ca. will presumably release the car to you with the license plates still on the car), so it will appear legal as it travels.

If (heaven forbid) you get stopped or in an accident, in any state you are travelling in, you could get asked for proof of insurance and current registration by the cops. You will have the bill of sale and last registration documents from the Calif owner. Hope that will be enough, but a California "one trip Permit" is something you'd get from the Calif. DMV. that would permit you to be on the highway legally there. The issue comes up from time to time
http://www.vectorbd.com/peugeot/archive/General/2004/Mar/0115.html
as you can see, I thought you would like to know about it.

Also, it would be wise ( before you fly out to get the car), whether on a private sale like this, to clear up whether you need to pay a tax on the purchase, either in California or your home state Likely so in one, one, but NOT in both states. (I honestly don't know.) It could be a reciprocity issue, so you need not pay in both states (ie in Calif when you take delivery and at home when you re register it) This issue comes up too sometimes http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/18492331/page/6.cfm

Trip permits, in fact if you need one (I'm not exactly sure, perhaps check with DMV in Calif AND your home state) for cars are usually cheap, free to about $10-$20 or so.

Wow, what a beauty! I love that color for some reason, and I also like the hub caps.
I'm doing the same thing April 3rd, only I'm going down to Atlanta, Georgia to get Jim's 204D and bringing it back to Vermont. More about the car here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=180768
Enjoy your trip, never been on I-70, someday....

When I bought my 409d in Ca, I got a one trip permit ($5?) to bring it home. Did not have to pay tax in CA. Make sure you schedule your trip so the Motor Vehicle Bureau is open when you purchase it. You don't want to be hanging around over a weekend waiting for the office to open on Monday.

Yikes, he said he's flying in on Saturday and hopes for a 3-4 day trip! How can he fix this (if it's a problem?)

I wonder if he might have the relevent documents faxed to him and do all the registration stuff in his own state before going down for the car. Motor vehicles might be asked if that is possible. Whatever the situation make sure the car is totally legal.
Otherwise your insurance company might balk if a claim came up. Do have a physical document with you that the car is insured as well. Just in case. I have seen things go upside down on occasion over irregulaities. I am not an apprehensive person just a little leary of insurance companies in general. Besides the above have a pleasant trip. Most older 240ds will go the distance in my opinion.

Don't know the details of how your buying it but I think you find that you need to own it to be able to register it, even just to get temporary transit plates. I just sent out a check today to pay for the car I'm buying, I'll get a bill of sale and then register here and send the plates down so the car will be ready to go when I get there. If I were you I'd call DMV in CA and see if there isn't something you can do, or check out there website.
Here are DMV's around Santa Cruz and you just missed when one was open on Saturday 3/17 http://www.dmv.ca.gov/fo/regions/watsonville.htm

San Jose office http://www.dmv.ca.gov/fo/offices/fo.cgi?fo=sanjose516

I'm definitely not in favor for paying for a vehicle in advance without seeing it in person. Too many things can go wrong with that. I made 4 long distance trips expecting to purchase a motorhome each time, and every time there was a problem which resulted in my not purchasing the vehicle. I always purchase round tickets now returning the next day, leaving me with an option should the deal fail.
Motor vehicle bureau was open on a Saturday morning when I bought my 409d. Went to the DMV with the seller and a bill of sale to get the one trip permit.

True, I've never done it before myself, but I'm going to trust my sellers (a forum member) judgement. He seems like a straight shooter and I'm getting an excellent deal on the car. If it was any other Ebay deal I wouldn't do it, but I've got a good feeling buying it from this forum member. Sometimes in life you have to trust your judgement. That said I just crossed my fingers and toes because there is always Murpheys Law.

you can say that again. we have made a verbal and email agreement to buy it and i'll pay him cash when we meet. the only thing i've paid in advance is the vehicle inspection by a mechanic and the mechanic again to change belts and such for the trip. so if i back out, he'll have new belts. i thought that was fair, kinda like a deposit.

i know you guys probably can't answer this but i'm just sort of talking out loud. so if i have a bill of sale, proof of insurance from my insurance and i'm just driving home, do i have to get the one trip fee from every state ? or just CA ?
