A/C/ Leak found...Now the fix ???
Using UV cans of 134a, I found my leak....it's coming out through the compressor shaft and through the clutch.
I have seen pictorials that make it seem like I could fix this with a new O-Ring, but I'm curious, has anyone here done that? If so, should I replace the drier and expansion valve as if I was installing a new compressor? Should I go ahead and get the new compressor? I cannot go another Texas summer without AC in the SD....help! Thanks in advance! |
How big is the leak? If it's not large, you could keep refilling it.

You need a front seal kit, requires some special tools to pull and re-install, but can be done in the car.
Check with your local independent shop. You can also buy a kit, remove compressor and take the front plate off and re-seal it, but just the seal is better. Peter |
Mine did the same thing. I just replaced the compressor and dryer. Since my car was already perverted to 134, I kept it that way. I used the thicker oil used for GM compressors. So far it has been working well.

Which one of your cars is this? If it is the 280, it has an old two cylinder compressor which can be resealed on the car without too much trouble. If it is the later ones it is probably an R4 in which case I would consider a new compressor NOT a rebuilt, the R4 does not always rebuild well.
Good luck, |

Thanks! |
Appreciate all the comments.
Larry, it's the 84SD with the R4 and I can put 3 cans of 134a in and it will leak out within an hour. I can watch it (I couldn't see it before, but have been able to hear it.....this time I saw it) Pretty significant leak. I saw the rebuild described on this page: http://trotliner.tripod.com/ac.html and thought that this may be cheaper than the alternative. Anyways...I was going to bid on a reman R4, but thought I would ask here first. |
These guys are in Midlothian, TX and have been really pro with some of us.
No interest, just a heads-up, since you're in TX also. |

1) Are you positive of where the leak is? 2) No way would I try to reseal that compressor while on the car... 2) I'd buy a reman compressor and install it before I screwed around with pulling the clutch off of an R4 Kevin, If you want to come over we can get the sniffer to confirm where the leak is.
