Just got my '81 300CD and its time to start workin on it

Hey guys. I am a newbie to the mercedes diesel engine and I think I scored a fantastic deal on mine. Just lookin for some info and I am sure I have come to the right place!

First... here it is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSAA%3AUS%3A11&viewitem=&item=330098236999

Looks nice, doesn't it!!!?!?!? well, the great news is, it is just as nice as it looks. Motor is spotless! Interior is pretty good. Tranny needs some TLC. Vacuum system seems to need the TLC too.

Ok, so to start, I need to get the thing to cut off. I have gone through the forum and this seems to be a problem thats not all too uncommon. The other vacuum problems would lead me to believe that the vacuum system is where I need to start.

The door locks dont work automatically. The brake booster seems to get good vacuum. I have pulled the line off the T connector going to the booster and it has some good suction, but the blower controls and all of the other things that seem to run off vacuum dont work at all. I have found one black hose that is up near the blower controls thats not connected to anything. It doesnt get any suction, so I am looking for the problem a little more towards the pump. Thats probably something I am gonna have to spend some time searching around to find where the problem originates.

The transmission: the issue here is that its quite slippy between 2-3 gear. if I am on the accelerator for this period it just doesnt want to get into third. This may be a sign that a new tranny is in order for me, or I am told that this may also have to do with the vacuum system. Any input on that is appreciated. Also, it seems to be revving pretty high when I am on the highway somewhere around 60 MPH. This could just be me having to get used to the sound, but the thing shifts into 4th gear really early , like 27 MPH and just goes up from there. I dont have a tach, so I dont know exactly how high it is, but I do know that these diesels are not meant to be high revving, so I am just trying to be careful with it. Its not slipping in 4th, cause if I hit the gas while there, it doesnt rev up, it just accelerates smoothly. Think thats about all the detail I can give on that.

Well, more questions will be coming soon, and thanks in advance for any info to help me along.

They love to revv. No problem what-so-ever running at 90mph all day. They were designed for it.

The little sticker under my gas door on my 300cd reads to add some 5 pounds ,I think, to normal tire pressure when driving at over 80 miles an hour ,this must mean the autobaun.

Extremely nice ride, man! All you need now is tinted windows and Euro headlights!

Of course this is in addition to the TLC.

Oh, and here's one thing too... There is a little hydraulic dampener, or something, down below the motor on the pass side that seems to be pretty leaky. It just looks like a miniature shock absorber. Any info on where to score one of those, and how hard it is to replace, would be great.

I'll take a shot at answering some of your questions. I would sort out the vacuum issues first. A lot works off vacuum, including the transmission shifting. I know lack of vacuum will cause the engine to rev way up before shifting. I would buy a CD service manual from the Mercedes-Benz classic center

http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/classic-center-california.do

under Classic Center & Technical Literature. The manual has vacuum diagrams if you dig far enough. Could be you have diaphragms leaking the door locks, trunk lock, or fuel filler door lock too.

If the vacuum doesn't solve the transmission shifting issue, check for posts on this site concerning the B2 transmission piston. Have read that this can affect transmission shifting and cause slipping, and that it is fixable without rebuilding the transmission.

The engines do rev up high in normal driving, something like 3000 to 3500 RPM at 60 MPH. And they do rev high normally for shifting, but not wide open throttle.

The hydraulic damper is a hydraulic shock designed to reduce engine vibrations. There should be one on both sides, and are about $35 each. They are available at any Mercedes parts dealer and are simple to replace if not a little hard to get to. P.S. There is a flat spot on the rod up next to the threads to get a wrench on it to hold the rod from turning.

Well, the sutting off issue is fixed!!! That took all of 3.2576273 seconds to find that the brown hose running through the firewall was not hooked up! YAY!! I will see if that fixes my soft shifting problem too. More to come...
