location of engine drain plug

Could anyone point out where the engine drain plug is on the 616.916 engine? (that's my 1974 240D)...I've never flushed the cooling system on this car before and want to do it tomorrow (finally good warmer weather here in Mass)
Thanks!!

Just above and toward the front of the starter motor

On the two 616 engines I have it is just above and toward the front of the starter motor. I think it is a 17mm bolt. If yours is there do not drop it taking it out it can fall down on between the block and the support arm and be very difficult to retrieve.

If you have a block heater, follow the cord. It will be within a few inches of it.

No block heater, but I think I found it. It is indeed (if that's the right one) just in front of and slightly above the starter. But it's a 23mm, not a 17mm (123's have 17mm drain plugs). Had to go out and buy a socket. I'd never used a 23mm before. You can reach it from above, not from below like the 123's (great, I won't have to roll around in the mud to drain the engine!). By the time I had all the tools together, it was getting dark, tomorrow I won't have time, and Sat night to Sunday we are supposed to get another 6 in. of snow!! March is a *****.
