Turbo vane damage

Searching the diesel forum for a possible answer (using the correct terminology and spelling really helps), resulted in no answer at all.

I happened to inspect the inlet vanes on my turbo and noticed several vanes that are chewed up on the edges. Obviously something had gotten in there.

Anything to worry about?

(I normally don't worry about the turbo. These are very hardy engine items and stand up to lots of miles.....just not mechanical abuse)

As far as I know this will throw off the balance of the impeller. Likely the bearings will fail prematurely. I think you can get just the insert, but I don't know too much about the 617 engine.

If there is any physical damage at all to the turbo's wheel the turbo is junk. Time to replace it and fix what caused the damage in the first place. The turbo is as perfectly balanced as humans can balance an object. It spins up to 120,000rpm so any damage is going to cause an imbalance, wear out the bearings, cause the compressor to wear on the housing and send metal dust into the engine.

Check the air filter for tears and proper seating, u-tube seals for tears and the u-tube for cracks.

Right. At best the wheel, housing and bearings only need to be replaced. Best bet is just to swap it for a good used turbo for much less than it would cost to replace the wheel or rebuild the entire turbo.

Look around, good used ones can easily be found for under $100. if they charge more than that, its either been rebuilt or they are trying to steal your money.
