Front crankshaft seal replacement

I have an 82 300D that needs the front seal replaced. I have removed the fan and shroud. Unfortunately, to remove the front bolt takes an impact and there is no room, unless I remove the radiator and a/c -which I do not want to do. Is there a way that I can safely keep the engine from turning as I use a socket to loosen the bolt on the front pulley? After this, I am certain I can remove the old seal / follow the directions I found in this forum to install a seal using an 8oz yoghurt cup (thank you for this one!) as a seal guide installation tool.

Wedge a breakerbar under the frame rail and use the starter to break it loose. Do you have a harmonic balancer puller? That balancer is not easy to remove once the bolt is out.

Remove the pulley and vibration damper by removing the six socket head cap screws. That will leave the balancing disc still attached to the crankshaft. The balancing disc has a couple of notches in it. Jam the disc with a chisel or 1/2" extension bar through a notch and under the oil pan lip so that the crankshaft will not turn. (You will need to use this procedure to tighten the crank bolt also.)

How do you go about getting it back on if you don't have a torque wrench that goes up to 200is ft lbs?

A pipe and a breaker bar.

When replacing the harmonic balancer, PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Many a 616/617 crankshaft has been destroyed by following the procedure that would be used on a keyed shaft. This one has no key, it has two steel dowels. You will have to put the balancer on with the dowel holes aligned perfectly and then tap the dowels in place. If they will not go in place with light tapping, pull the balancer and put it on again. It might take fifty times to get it aligned properly. If it takes fifty times so be it. This is a job for lots of patience.

Larry is absolutly right on that. Also beware of putting the balancer on 180 degrees off.

Mark the balancer with paint or something to get it in the correct position in case some thing moves while you are doing the seal replacement.

Replacing the 300TD front crankshaft seal and other front of block oil leaks

I discussed the exact job, plus some more for the front seals in a "while your there" type of post.
