check your muffler hangers- if you want

... making a plan to attack the strainer for the fuel tank and noticed my muffler rubber hangers were just about rotted through.

could have been very expensive. wrapped some wire around for now. may want to check yours.

also did a search on cleaning the strainer. couldnt find the steps for a 83 300sd seems pretty straight forward- thoughts/ links -thanks

Soon after I bought my 300TD, I went outside one morning and my whole exhaust system was setting on the ground. The last remaining hangars had given up thankfully during the night versus driving down the road. Pretty lucky.

I really need to replace my hangers and the buffers, too. The exhaust really rattle upon deceleration especially if I'm making a turn. IIRC the Mercedes hangers have a metal or wire core for safety purposes so if the rubber fails it doesn't fall off.

The SDL had a long history of the rear hanger rubber failing. It failed again last year in TX between Centerville and nowhere. I bought an off the counter "O" shaped hanger and cinched it off in the center with a plastic tie strap. No more problems

OT, but ... The other day I was driving to work and got behind a kind of beat-up late 70s or 80s BMW that had it's muffler hanging from a too-long chain that was hooked to something in the trunk. Every time he hit a slight bump, the muffler swung all over, very close to the pavement ... got out form behind him in a hurry ... I think we've all done little things with tiedowns and tape now and then, but maybe hanging your muffler from a dog chain is a bit more makeshift than is acceptable ...

Mine just fell today doing diesel purge as I shut the engine.

Will this effect anything on my turbo or exhaust manifold?? Should I be worried?? Or can I just install new hangers and forget about it??

Oh man, have I ever been through this. Three times in a row.

The first time, replaced them with generic rubber O rings from Autozone.

That lasted about 3 months and 400 miles and they failed!

Then replaced then with the same thing but doubled up (used two of them instead of one) and this fix failed TWICE more!!

Finally got wise and ordered ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT Mercedes hangars (they are square) for less than $6 each and the problem was fixed forever.

Definately a case where ONLY Mercedes Benz parts should be used.

It should be OK, just get you some new hangers. I saw some at Pep Boys, but they were about $5 bucks apiece. I actually have mine tie wrapped on the Squash. I walked out one morning and mine was also laying on the ground.
Oh btw, you certainly don't want to remove your exhaust as mentioned above.....
