Manual Sunroof Lubricant

Any Idea what sort of lubricant to use on the manual sunroof runners? Is it is dealer only thing?

Also, does one need to lubricate the handle-lock mechanism of the sunroof? Seems like it is getting harder and harder to open and close.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks -harv

My handle-lock mechanism makes a nasty screech sound when I lock in into position, and the sunroof is hard to pull open and closed. I haven't looked into it, but I'm thinking a disassembly is in order to lube it all up?
Thanks for starting this thread...I hadn't gotten around to it...I'm now a hijacker

The sunroof lube is a dealer-only item. It's special stuff, called "Gleitpaste". It costs a fortune (something like $75 for the 1-lb can). A photo of the can is below. Clean off all old lube first before applying the Gleitpaste. Don't use other lubes, they attract dirt and thicken in colder temps.

Great. Thanks for the help. I've got to buy some other parts, so I'll get the smaller quantity from Rusty. -harv

I just really cleaned off the tracks and everthing that touched as good as I could. Then I used a teflon gun lube...a real light weight non-greasy product. My sunroof works very well now.....I just told the car that this was the SPECIAL MERCEDES SUN ROOF GREASE!

Cost...$0.00 and 20 minutes of time...already had the lube as I spray this stuff all over my guns.

Now, I don't think I'd use wheel bearing grease...but I KNOW I don't need to buy a 1# can at $75.00!! Now if you also use this stuff to grease mufflers then it might be worth it.

I have a film canister of the special stuff that somebody was nice enough to give me. Last time I lubed it I used about a pea sized glob. You could almost lube all of the MB sunroofs in the country with that tub!

Yes - that $75 can will last a DEALERSHIP probably 5-10 years. A film-canister size container is enough for probably a dozen sunroofs if you're careful. I think you can get the small amount for under $10 but I haven't asked Rusty for his current price.

Other lubes may work initially, but can either gum up over time or thicken in cold weather. If you use some other stuff, and later on the sunroof slows down again, you'll need to repeat the clean-and-relube job.

I use Tri-Flow on sunroof slides, its a Teflon spray lube. Is that what you use on your gun? it seems to work well and has a nice smell too, makes you think for a sec that your driving a new car
