remove replace diesel in tank sock

how to remove and replace the in tank filter ''sock''
in a 83 300sd

we have changed both filters under the hood
car idles and sometimes runs fine
small clear filter is not filling completely or quickly
car is has intermitent power loss [will not rev over 2000 rpm in gear]
if allowed to idle power comes back after a minite or two
I am thinking partly block line or sock in tank

tips or tricks to get at the sock and clear the lines
other things this could be caused from??

The tank screen is under the car. No need to remove the seats. Just drain the tank and crawl under the car to remove.

it is law, whenever there is fuel tank related issues, needing repair, the tank will always be nearly full.

Under the vehicle, directly above the differential, will be two hoses. One hose is the supply hose and one is the return hose. The supply hose is connected directly to the tank strainer. You'll know it's the supply hose because there will be a 46mm nut below the hose fitting. You'll likely need a 46mm or 1 13/16" socket to get the tank strainer to remove. However, some folks are fortunate to be able to remove it by applying torque to the fuel line and having the strainer move instead.

You'll definitely need a 5 gallon container to drain the residual fuel.........and that's after the gauge is just about on empty. Don't try it with any higher gauge reading.........or make sure you've got 10 gallons of storage available.
