Ponton diesel - should I go for it?

I may go and see a Ponton diesel from the mid 1960's this weekend here in Toronto. Manual column shift. Guy wants $3,500 Canadian for it.

New tires, overhauled injectors and fuel lines, new glow plugs, road worthy and licensed. I think it may be possible to include a spare engine and tranny (manual) in the deal.

Any idea if this is a reasonable price? Anyone on the forum have any experience with these models?

I have an old Ponton Diesel - 1960 190Db - and they are great cars IF the rust isn't too bad. I think the price is reasonable if it includes verifiable records, drives nice, body and interior are fairly nice, etc. Does it have the Webasto roof?

Ritchie,
I think the seller usually has about 10% "wiggle room" built in the price if he or she is smart. The asking price is about $2975 US. With a classic like that, its a matter of whats it worth to you! I would have a certified check in my back pocket for $3150 Candian when I looked at it. If the seller does't budge and the vehicle is such a good deal that you think you can't walk away from it you can make up the difference with a personal check, cash or another certified check.
Good Luck! It sounds sweet!

Go for it! I'd love one. Your 990 tractor is probably faster, though.

If it's a mid-60's diesel, then it's not a ponton, but a finnie. The ponton era ended in 1962.

Unhappy 1961 190D - passed up on it :(

Thanks for the advice guys! I went to see this car (and my wife thought the shape was "cute" so I got the Presidential seal of approval ) but there were some real issues

- a rust hole in the body beside the clutch pedal
- the chrome was totally shot
- carpets completely rotted and surface rust over the entire floor (I have to wonder if the vehicle sat with an open window and the rain was blowing in)

none of the above were show stoppers - what totally put me off were

- no license plates despite the fact that the owner said it was licensed and driven regularly
- no rubber blades in the wipers, which shows how often it was really driven
- dash was messed up with all sorts of cheapo switches, missing heater controls etc
- strange ripples in several body panels

This car would be a restoration project - and I don't have the time for that. I wish car sellers would tell the truth more often - could save a whole bunch of time!
