Question Does this look like a fuel filter?

This is a picture from a 1990 350SDL. MY question is, is this the primary fuel filter or something else.

Thats what I call a primary fuel filter, the other, the big spin on looking one, is the secondary.

Why do you ask?

I would be pretty surprised if it was original, mine tend to become clogged every 20-40K miles or so. The replacement looks like this:

I like the clear type, you can see when they start to become dirty.

I went and got a couple pre-filters from the dealer last week because I didn't want to pay shipping on a $2.70 item...and whattya know, the dealer had "OEM MB" ones on hand, for: $2.80 looks like the dealer won that time

Anyways, they are white, have a MB part # and star emblem on them, and smaller than the ones from Bosch/worldpac. Fuel seems to flow through them and become filtered during the flowing through....so I am guessing it works the same. I admit the clear ones are nice to see when they're dirty....but I've never had a problem with one being clogged, and I run my filters (primary and secondary) about 25-30k between changes...and the prefilter is usually barely dirty.

I've got the same set-up in my cars, All of my 300CD's have the same filter, in the same location as that. I didn't know that is the 'Primary' filter, I thought it was the "Secondary' filter, even though it is the first filter the fuel passes through. I always thought, the bigger, screw on filter, is the primary.
Still learning these cars, all of this stuff is a little new to me still.

Yup! That's what I used to think too...until I thought about it!

You mean that's not the fuel expanding venturi used to improve fuel efficiency?

My dealer only has the white ones,so I always order a few from Phil when I buy something else. If you change them at 20-30K, you probably won't have a problem unless you get some dirty fuel.
