That happened to me! I was coming down a steep hill towards a stop sign and applying brake pressure pretty hard. The rotor just snapped apart just like that. Had to do some pretty quick maneuvering to avoid the traffic on the upcoming street.

At least this senario usually does not imobilise the car. The caliper holds the disk in position and the hat or hub component rotates freely.
The cause from my perspective is the very deep hat portion plus the thinness of the lower portion of the disk at the casting transition. The deep hat may flex a little as well with the torque when braking. Sometimes a chunk of the hat will break away and fall off the car. I never investigated different rotor brands to see if the casting was a little thicker on some brands in the transition area. I still suspect the primary problem to be possible torque flex transition movement as the hat portion is so deep. It probably uiltimatly just fatigues out. |

i doubt that this will ever occur unless you are thinner than the allowable thickness on a rotor.

When I bought the car, it was in dire need of back brakes. It was all the way down to the metal. I, in my infinet wisdom, tossed a set of pads on to bring it home. I new I needed to have the rotor turned or replaced, I was being stupid about it, I just procrastinated. Yup, I had to jam on the brakes and I heard a bang, then a grinding sound. I slowly drove home about 2 miles and there you have it. I guess the metal backing plate scored it a little deeper than I thought .

MB rotors are disposable -- you need new ones after two sets of pads, as a general rule.
They are also fairly inexpensive, I think the rears are $20 or so! Once they get thin enough, you can break them as you did, or the pistons in the calipers will extend too far, the backing plate will hit the spring across the top, and the pistons will jam, causing the brakes to drag and overheat.
