Need engine advice QUICK!!!

Just wondering if this motor would bolt into my 1975 240d.

Would it bolt right up to the existing engine mounts and my 4 speed manual tranny?

What peripheral items would I have to change and contend with?

Or should I just stick to finding a 240d motor for a 74 - 76 vintage and make things easy? Thanks so much, Chris

I'm sure others will chime in, but you'll have to at least change the front springs and I THINK the 240D flywheel would have to be used-do a search on engine swaps, I know people have put the turbo 617.952 engine in a 240D before. IMHO I wouldn't do it without a compression test on the Ebay engine first.

Should fit no probs..

The engine back-plate is the same on the 616 and the 617, the flywheel also, but you'll need the 300D starter as the 616 starter will turn the 617 engine rather slowly incomparison to the 616, and the drive-shaft from donor vehicle as well as gear-shift linkage assuming the donor is a 4 spd manual, as the trans sits further back in the chassis when behind a 617. The Front-Springs will probably need replacing as the front end would otherwise ride too low. The 617 is a fair bit heavier than the 616.

FYI, I put a 617.912 in my 80 240, used the origional 616 starter (starter that came with the 617 had a sticky bendix), and never touched the front end suspension. Car cranks, starts, and handles fine, sits level at standing. If anything sags, it's the rear when in gear/under power.

I doubt a 616 from a w123 will fit in a w115 240D. The oil filter will interfere with the steering linkage.

that is a 617 engine from a 115.

if you want to upgrade to a five cyl you will want the five to come from a 115. if you make this swap you will also want to change the rear end to a higher ratio. i recommend a 346 from a na 300d.

on the 115 you won't have to change the driveshaft, but you will want to change the radiator and the speedo.

when we converted my 240 to 300 i think we didn't do the springs and it was ok. in any case, the job of changing the springs is separate from the engine work and won't change whether you do it now or later.

good luck. it is best to start with a donor car so you will have all the parts there.

If the seller is offering any other part you want to take, ask about taking the whole car as previous mentioned in posts you may need this or that and it would be much better to have them handy rather then look for them after you realize what it is that you need.

Man, if the winning bid was $220, Id keep a fabricator in steak, beer, and greenbacks for a day or two and make it work.
