300TD '87, what's it worth?

I found an '87 300TD in well-used condition, about 250k miles, needs lots of fixing to make it respectable (IMO). I'm trying to figure out what to offer the guy. I can figure out what it'll cost to get it in shape, will subtract that from its estimated value, but would like to know what an '87 T124 is worth in good functional condition with some cosmetic issues and 250k on the clock.

ebay seems to get stupid money for them most of the time, if they actually sell, so I'd like a consensus on real-world value please.

IMHO if you subtract what you need to fix from its current value he will have to pay you a coupld grand to take it. That is just based on my experience. MAKE sure it doesn't have a cracked head.

What is it worth? Well that depends on where it is and where it has lived its life. My car was always a Northwest car and has no rust. It did't spend a lot of time in the sun etiher so the dash wasn't cracked. I paid $6500 which was way too much, but there were others that were willing to pay the same. So like most products it's what the market will bear.

If you haven't read the 124 603 document, I have included it below.

Could not said any better.

I just sold mine within 5 minutes advertising it a couple of months ago for $1500. I could have asked a little more but that was how much I sold for it.

A 20 year old car will have lots of issues.

Thanks.

Most of the issues don't worry me, I have a complete '87 300D for parts, can make a good car out of it. Primarily I don't want to get upside-down in the car, if it's a $2000 car when I'm finished putting $2000 into fixing it up I'd rather keep looking for one with lower miles. Personally I feel that a car with 150k-200k miles has more useful life left so I don't want to bury myself in this one unless I'm in it for money I can get back out.

If it's only worth $2k without issues and 250,000miles, then I'm going to offer him parts-car money in its present state (leaking rear shock, bad blower motor, sloppy fan-clutch, bad rear bumper, some body issues, etc.).

What's parts-car money for an '87 TD?

Thanks for the opinions so far, ...

The leaky rear "shock" is very expensive and your 300D will not be able to donate that part. The TD has a self-leveling rear suspension and these struts are hydraulic. Chances are, the accumulators, control valve or even the pump may need some work at that mileage. All these are pretty expensive.

That's right, I forgot that one. I don't think that is in the document. I'm working on mine right now. I think I have it narrowed down to the valve; although I may do accumulators as well. The shocks usually hold up well, but if they are leaking they need to be replaced.

I think if you can get it for $1500 - $2000 you will be ok.

I've got a good set of used: shocks, accumulators, and a leveling valve, the rear suspension is not a problem. But, ... if it is bad it needs to be a deduct item, I'm figuring a minimum of $250 deduct for the leak if the pump is working properly.

It came from the south, but has wintered in the salt the past 5years, looks like it has some body-cancer starting and that usually also means that everything exposed will be that much more trouble to work on.

I'm going to offer $500 and see what happens, thanks. Oh, no 3rd seat either, no leather or bun-warmers (a big deal to me), but the colors are good (not a white/blue ex-service vehicle). Damn I wish I hadn't sold my 3rd-seat on ebay!
