Old Mercedes, you have to beg "oh please drop it down to 3rd", the trans is like "**** you what is this", then you floor it and are like "I own you do it", and it does but not without taking its sweet time.
Mine also does the delay then kickdown on takeoff sometimes...so rare though it doesn't bother me.

My car seems to be willing to drop the gears quickly. If I go around a corner going 30, slow in the turn and give it maybe 3/4 to full throttle it does a nifty double gear drop, feels awesome! Then it spools right up while in second and takes off like mad. I love driving my car.

Our '83 is like you described though. It says "what...I don't want to downshift....leave me alone..." then you slam down the pedal and it sort of lurches, says "**** fine, I'll do it" and dumps the gear. Takes about 3 seconds wherein it seems to completely clutch the tranny, the engine goes up 1000rpm and then it engages third gear, really throwing the car forward when it does it. Probably does it for revenge for making it shift. Still fun though.
