Is there a way to manually force oil into all of the little spots it needs? I will continue trying to start it until it works or i find a new engine. Thanks for all the advice.. I will keep this updated.

yea i meant that if u saw smoke coming out the exhaust when it was slowly dying. My father got a frozen engine running again after he ran it out of oil. however it had a horrible rod knock afterwards, and he just replaced the engine

I filled it up with a total of 2 quarts and then it was turning. I went to the store excitedly hoping that more oil would help it so now it has a total of 4 quarts and its not turning again. maybe when i get home, it will start turning again. I dont have internet at home so I have to ask as many questions as possible then go home and try the results.

Probably the most cost effective solution is to find a donor engine and junk this one and part out what you can. It's a shame because the now dead engine was such a low mileage 617 and would have had at least 150k of life left in it.

Find a good lower mileage 617 out of a wreck or something and drop it in. It'll be cheaper than getting the current one rebuilt considering the amount of damage incurred based on the symptoms.

Does the 123 have a low oil level light? Or was that a feature that started with the 124? I would assume the oil pressure was at or near zero bar during the whole ordeal.

my gauge was reading all the way up to 40 when driving, it was low while idling. There is no oil pressure light however.

I think the judgments of a totalled engine are somewhat premature. If 4 quarts brought the level up to the top notch on the dipstick, it's possible there was still oil circulating in the engine, especially if the oil pressure guage never dropped to 0 which is how I understand the original poster's reply. If the engine is now turning over with the starter, it's definitely not seized.
What was the temperature guage reading when it stopped?
Do you know what happened to the oil that disappeared?

I also think it is premature to call it scrap. The person drove 30 miles, stopped for 2 hours and then drove 1 mile when it began requiring more pedal to keep going then died. It wasnt run out of oil. Sounds like it was initially 2 qts low and now is overfilled by 2 qts? Bit confusing.

I'd start with the basics and confirm it's got/getting fuel, air and good GP's and afterwards take it to a mechanic if it still doesnt start.

Seconded. Check all fuel filters, look for air in clear pre-filter, check the air filter, charge the battery, check glow plug resistance, bring to a reputable diesel mechanic. Check the mechanic thread for good ones in your area.

If it's still turnin', then its still burnin'.
Good luck young padouan. May the Benz be with you.

Ben

With new info like adding 4 qts put the level above the full mark, then about half of the oil disappeared. When you try to crank the engine, does the cam appear to move? You can test this by having someone crank the engine while you look into to oil fill area.

I can't do any tests rights now since the car is 30 miles away from me, but I can update some info on the car. I recently (two weeks ago) put in the new glow plugs in parallel kit from dieselgiant.com. fuel/air is fine, i'm pretty sure. The engine will turn, I can see the fan moving while I crank, but it will slowly rev, stop, rev, stop.. It sounds like it's scraping or something really bad is happening when I attempt to start it. It's like something is putting a lot of strain or resistance and when I try to crank it, it starts scraping and won't let it turn fast. And the oil situation.. when I originally checked the oil level, there wasn't even a mark on the dipstick, it was completely gone (except the scraping oil on the sides). So I know the oil was all the way down but there was still residue on the sides, so it may have had a little left. I can't see any other problem though.. I have now put a total of 5 quarts in and it's above the full line on the dip stick, and still is not starting. I have no idea what happened to the oil. I checked where I usually park the car and under the car currently, and there are no oil drips. How can ALL the oil have just disappeared? I've seem cars driven for months and not been oil-changed or had new oil put in. How could this happen after about a month after an oil change w/ new filter? Oh, and the battery is fully charged and all electrical seems to be in great shape.

oh, also, The engine would not turn at all before I started putting oil in the engine. I don't see what else it could be.

You almost need to remove all the belts and see if alt or water pump or something else is seized. It would sure be a better outcome than the engine itself......

BTW, you can't go a month with out checking the oil on these cars.....

The fan turns because of the belts and the crank pulley. The cam shaft is conntected to the crank shaft via the timing chain.

If there is no visible external oil leak, it will either be internal (mixing with the coolant) or consumed by the engine. Check for oil/oil film in the radiator or the upper hose.

A lot of times in a rebuild, people will use old parts that appear to be good. Doing so just adds a weak link, IMHO.

Do you get the same scraping noise when you turn the crank with the wrench?
