Questions related to 240D Engine Belts, Water Pump, and AC compressor

So, I'm working on replacing engine belts and the water pump on my 83 240D and I have a few questions.

1. I have the belt off the water pump, crankshaft pulley and alternator, and the belt off the power steering pump and crankshaft pulley. The car is in a place where it can't be jacked up, so I am finding it difficult to determine how to release tension on the AC compressor and remove that final belt. I never use the AC (don't even know if it works) and never will, so I am considering just removing the belt and not putting one back on, and then removing the AC compressor completely at a later date when I can jack the car up. Any problems with this besides no AC?

2. I suspect that it is going to be difficult to get the new steering pump belt back on so I am wondering what direction the crankshaft pulley turns (when looking at the front of the engine) when the engine is running so I can potentially jump the belt onto the pulley when I crank the engine with the starter.

3. I have the fan off the water pump (removed four bolts) but I can't figure out how to get the clutch/coupler that the fan attaches to off. I see no other bolts, so I am assuming it is just friction holding it on, but I don't want to just start whacking things with a rubber mallet until I know for sure. Is there some trick to getting this off the pump that I am missing? My Chilton manual is very vague in regards to this process.

Any advice is appreciated.

I just replaced my belts on my 240D over the weekend. The AC has two bolts you need to loosen, plus the little tightener screw/bolt on the side, mine wasnt too free, but I kept loosening the tighterner bolt, and I could finally pull the ac down far enough to get some slack and roll the old belt off and roll the new belt on. Of course I had mine in my farm shop and I used the MB jack, and raised the drivers side, blocked it up, and I had plenty of room to work. The motor turns clockwise as looking at the motor from front. The power steering pump belt was perhaps the easiest one I had to replace, you can get it plenty loose to slip the belt off easily. The hardest one I had was the alternator belt. Removal was easy, but the new belt I had to grab the fan, plus the pully and roll it on that way, but it worked. Some others will probably give you some better information, but that is how I did it just last weekend. Cant help you on the water pump.

Just cut the A/C belt for now.

So you removed the fan and fan clutch, correct? There should be 4 bolts that hold the fan and fan clutch together.

I removed the 4 bolts and all that came off was the fan itself. The rest of the unit (clutch? and belt pulley) is still attached to the pump. The new water pump merely has a disk with 4 bolt holes so I am assuming I need to get the rest of the parts off the old pump, but I can't see anything else holding the unit on. Just friction?

If you removed the 4 10mm bolts the fan and fan clutch should have come off of the water pump assembly. Friction and a small stump of metal holds the fan clutch so you can put the bolts back in. There are 4 bolts that attach the fan to the fan clutch, and 4 bolts that attach the fan clutch to the water pump. When all assembled the bolt heads should be facing each other.

Did you remove the fan after removing the water pump? It is designed so that you have to remove the fan clutch from the water pump before you can remove the fan from the fan clutch.

There is no fan clutch on a 240D, just the 4 long bolts that hold the fan to the w/p.

coadman.... His is an 82 which means the AC compressor is not on top but the new style down low on the drivers side.

I wish I had that set up on the 300d. it's a PITA to remove the fan clutch mounting bolts.

Thanks for the info Steve!

Guess I need to add some more info in my sig, I have a 1979, but with a 1980 motor(at least according to PO), anyway, the AC is on the bottom on the drivers side.

It was right around "80" they changed. I rebuilt the engine from an "80" and put it in my "79" which had the compressor on top (York). No AC at all now, not a need around here

So, if I took the 4 bolts off and the fan came off without the coupler and pulley, do I need to just start whacking with a rubber mallet?

I believe thats about it, shouldn't take allot, the fan is bolted right to the water pump, which is actually just the "impeller" which is replaced. The long bolts go through a round alumaum "spacer" (about 2" thick and the same dia as the w/p head)

For the AC belt you can just cut it off. No problems.
Here is a post showing the 3 bolts for the compressor and the adjusting bolt. Scroll down to find the pictures.

Rookie question - alt belts...

It also shows the power steering pump bolts. Loosen the 2 bolts and then loosen the adjusting bolt as shown. The belt should slip on without bumping the engines starter. It rotates clockwise when looking at the engine from the front.

The water pump pulley is removed by taping it with a hammer or mallet. Be gentle but it does require taps with a hammer. The center shaft looking part holds the assembly pretty well.

coadman

You might want to check the post above. The AC compressor has 3 bolts that mount it.

Great! Thanks for all the help. I figured the water pump pulley was just held on with friction once the 4 bolts are removed, but just wanted to make sure there wasn't some trick.

I'm probably just going to cut the AC compressor belt and remove the compressor later. No need for AC.

I was happy to get the other belts off easily because I thought some of the bolts may be frozen, especially on the alternator, but everything moved freely.
