Steering Noise - Rumble '83 300SD 153K
Hello All
First, thank you for all of the information you have provided. It has helped me tremendously. The car makes a rumble noise - much like going over rumble strips in the road - whenever turning right at a speed high enough to make the body lean. I changed motor mounts (lemforder) and engine shocks based on information found on the forum and while it is better, the condition is still there. The noise changes based on engine RPM . What do I check? |
Ok, time to check tranny mount, flex disks, center support bearing, front and rear suspension points like UCA and LCA bushings, trailing arm bushings, etc.

I will check over the front suspension but the PO has already done the front links and other than some outside edge wear on the left front tire there seems to be nothing wrong. Question is - what could be allowing the noise to get transmitted since it is RPM related? I don't have a place to continuously put the car into a high speed turn but I can tell the noise is RPM related by the way it changes when changing speeds in a curve. FYI - I have put about 30K miles on the car since I bought it. |

I fixed it!!! Well I think I did...
This is very strange and I don't believe I have seen anything on the forum about this. It is almost like the new motor mounts are too "soft". This is the second new set I have tried on the car and it still makes the rumble noise when turning right at a decent clip. So I made a spacer ring (about 1/2 inch thick) to go under the driver side mount, used longer 8mm bolts to install the mount and spacer, and put it back together. NO MORE NOISE!! Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I have seen reference on Lemforder mounts about "blue dots". Does that mean there are other mounts? Thanks!! |
Hmmm....I've heard someone mention too soft mounts before but don't know what make they were. Also, when I bought mine, the listing showed a right and left. I don't know if this was for a particular brand or not.
