Quick ALDA Question.

I am just wondering, if you remove the ALDA totally, so that the little rod is up all the time, is that giving your engine full fuel all the time? I was under the impression that when the alda recieved boost it would push the rod down and slowly cut fuel. Am I correct or wrong?

No idea which way the ALDA moves, but removing it does give the engine full fueling.

It's my understanding that when the turbo pressure builds it builds pressure in the ALDA thereby compressing the aneroids and allowing the rod to come up and increasing the fuel. I think the only problem with removing the ALDA might be to much fuel when you doen't need it but thats just a guess. If you look at a picture of a disassembled ALDA the aneroids are air tight chambers so a rise in surrounding pressure will cause them to compress. I think Diesel Giant has some pictures of an ALDA disassembled.

When the little rod is up, the IP doesn't restrict the fuel. Naturally, the engine doesn't get full fuel all the time because is would quickly run away and destroy itself. However, the driver has the capability of delivering maximum fuel with his right foot. Mash you foot with no ALDA and the engine gets full fuel.........whether it has sufficient air........or not. If it's below boost conditions, it certainly does not have sufficient air and it will smoke.

When the ALDA receives boost, it allows the the rod to rise and increases the fuel that can be delivered via the rack (your right foot).

You can remove the ALDA completely and you won't notice any difference unless you mash the pedal from a low rpm condition......where you'll definitely get smoke.

Both my 603's have the ALDA removed. I've kept it on the 617 because it's adjusted perfectly and I don't have the need to remove it and discard the safety that it provides.

Actually it will have an effect (I don't know if it has the same effect on a 603 ad it does the 617). It will alter the amount of fuel the IP delivers relative to pedal position. Say you get 50% of possible fuel delivery "X" pedal position, without the ALDA you would get ~70% of possible fuel delivery at the same pedal position.

Yes, I agree.

The statement was made with regard to visible smoke, not the effect of fuel relative to pedal position.
