Best Rebuilt Trans

Who does the best rebuilt exchange on 80"s diesel transmissions?

techguy512 04-07-2007 01:16 PM

My dealer recommended Sun Valley.

Depends where you live. There is a good rebuilder in new jersey as well I believe.

MBBOB 04-07-2007 03:26 PM

I live in Pittsburgh, PA

Shipping from Sun valley would probably be a killer

I had good results with Sun Valley. Just ask them how much the shipping will be. SVMBZ@aol.com. Steve

Since you live in PA you might want to try locating the new jersey rebuilder. I really suspect they are good with a factory type operation. They may or may not only do mercedes transmissions but talking to an east coast mercedes dealer might turn up their contact information. I think they are that good. There also was some mention of them in the archives I believe.

Best? Mercedes direct, I have no idea how much one would cost; give the local dealer a call.

I have heard a lot of good things from Sun Valley, but I think when I do mine I'll try to find a local place.

Does anybody know the address or phone number of the NJ Transmission shop. I used to deal with one called Clark Transmission in Clark NJ but they moved and I lost track of them.

Transmeister in Orange CA. Ted is the owner and your transmission will come out looking like a factory rebuild (and work like one too). He uses 99.5% factory parts (not aftermarket) and his place looks like a clean room.

He was the head transmission mechanic for 3 different Orange County dealerships before he opened his own shop. Ted has been in business for over 15 years and 90% of his business is other independent MB shops that can't afford a full time transmission mechanic (or can't rebuild a trans fast enough to make any money).

He can change a 4 speed to a 5 and a 5 to a 6 speed (a few extra parts are needed). If you speak with him, he'll quote you updated band part numbers off the top of his head.

If you want a quality, clean rebuild that will last and want to save 20% to 30% off the factory price, consider Transmeister.

I've been to both Sun Valley and Transmeister. There is no comparison in the cleanliness or the quality of parts. You get what you pay for.

Spoke to Ted at Tramsmeister, and he will not ship a trans out of CA due to his 2 year warranty. Needs to be able to provide service.

But I told him my problem and he told me right where to go in the valve body to fix it, so for nothing else I would recommend him to anyone in CA

Thanks

Automatics, or only manuals?

pj67coll 04-09-2007 05:19 PM

Does that mean he can change my 4spd stick into a 5spd?

Ted mostly rebuilds automatics and I don't think he can change a manual 4 to a manual 5. He can change some auto 4's to an auto 5 provided you have the extra parts (I think they are hard case type parts, not bands or seals).

I should have added that Ted only works on Mercedes transmissions (no BMW's, Volvo's etc.) No engines, no brakes, no front ends etc. Transmissions only.

please post his contact info.

data point.. About a year ago I was told ~$4000 to swap for a factory rebuild by the service guy at a local dealership. Good warranty coverage though.
