1700 miles in two days, a testament to our cars

How many people would trust a 20+year old car with 316,000 miles on it to drive from virginia to South Carolina and back twice in three days? Down and back thursday and down and back saturday. I don't think I would trust anything else but my benz. Our cars longevity and dependability is phenominal. We know our cars, we take care of our cars and we trust our cars. I had the choice of taking the benz or the toyota. I chose the benz.

The trips were mostly I-95 at 70-85mph. Not a hitch, used no oil, was comfortable and got 31+mpg.

Our cars are hard to beat

What is your secret to getting 31 mpg @70-85? I can't get close to that with mine.

My 82 (380+K miles) has been in MI, TX, and AZ (about 5000 miles total) within the last month. Next month it will be in IL and MN several times (about 6-8000 more miles). It's not about age or miles, it's all about condition. Just "maintain it like an aircraft" and it will take you anyplace.

In my 300SD the longest I've ever driven was from Toronto to Vancouver and that was all in 1 Sitting, the only stops that were made was fuel for the car and for us in the car. I would never think of taking my BMW on a trip like that!

Put 500 miles on my car a few days after I got it to go to a school football game, only problem I had was nearly running out of fuel around 1am on the way back and not being able to find any open gas stations with diesel...

Wow, That's the kinda miles I drive in my tractor trailer..That's awesome to do in the Mercedes though. I'm picking up my 560 SEC in Calgary, Alberta, and driving it to NewHaven, Ct. pretty soon. I also just sealed the deal on an 82 280CE, from E-bay, which is out in St.Luis, on the Illinois, Missouri state line. I will be picking that one up, and driving it home also. The thing of it is.., I don't know these cars, either of them, all that well. I've purchased them, but haven't been behind the wheel of either of them.
The 560 has spent it's whole life in a museum like environment, climate controlled, etc. It only has 4500 kilometers on it,( equal to around 3800 miles) so the car is pretty much still brand new. The 280CE, is also a Euro, and has what's equal to 160,000 miles on it. These cars, not being diesel, and me having no past experience with either one. I get a bit nervous, just thinking about how these trips home will end up going. Guess, we'll see though.

Trucikinik, one of my best buddies lives in Hamden. Drives a 70Chevelle SS, or an 85 GN,or a 68 Olds droptop, or now a 65 GTO. ( he tried to find me a 80-85 280 CD around there to no avail )

Anyway, without ever owning a MBz, Ebay'd then hopped in a 220K mile '95 E300D and drove it 450 miles through a nor'easter about a month ago.

Hail Marys help I guess.

34.7mpg at 3100rpm (82-85mph) and nailing on cyl #5. Flogging it as we speak (actually R&R in FLA land right now), so I can indeed get the next milage badge at 330K.

maintain it like an aircraft! I like that!

until i got my 240D in january of 06. Between 2001 and 2006 it was driven only a total of 27K in 5 years. THis past summer i took it over 18K in 10 months. It only left me stranded 1 time, and that was when i first got it and burned my starter out. Other than that. I would take that thing anywere and do take it anywere possible. and just like craig says "its like an aircraft, If you replace parts and keep it up, it will go on forever" -Dr kobus Toit. i firmly belive in that

When in good tune these are extremly reliable cars; I would take the SDL anywhere at the drop of a hat.

nice cars...

Check Belts - Hoses ; brakes & coolant .
Change - oil & oil -air & fuel filters.
If they have not been daily drivers for a while, you may want to put a new set of tires on in case of dry rot or cracking....( my new '82 CD had a set of 4 MIchelins that were manufactured in 1996; and had about 85% tread left on them. )

Bring your cell phone - digital camera ( for us.) & AAA card.

....
