How do you properly "burp" the engine after a coolant flush?

I flushed the antifreeze in my car a while back - radiator and block. Sometimes it runs a little hotter than it should. I'm thinking I may have an air bubble but I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I used Zerex G-05 and blended it with distilled water.

How can I make sure there isn't any air in there? '82 240D.

Thanks,

Scott

Fill the engine thru the top radiator hose while the car is pointed uphill. Afterwards, run it with the heater wide open until all the air is purged.

That seems to work for me too, then I just drive it keep an eye on the coolant level for a few days.

I might add that you can remove the "block to fire wall heater hose" at the fire wall and wire it up. When coolant comes out that hose while filling via the upper radiator hose, reattach it. Maybe that step isn't necessary with just a T-stat change but if the block has been drained, I think it helps.

if you use one of those "flush and fill" tees in the upper heater hose, it makes life simple.
just take off the cap, fill block with distilled water, then pour in 1.5 gallons of G-05 and tighten the cap up.
perfect mix and no air every time.
also, on an 82, with the upper bleed hose on the radiator tank going to the expansion tank, with the car pointed uphill, there should be no air in the system when you fill through the expansion tank.

No expansion tank on a 240D tho, goes right overboard:D

heh, yeah, I meant, all TURBO 82's... sorry.
if it's not got an expansion tank, it should have a vent drain plug in the thermostat housing.

A word to the wise, AVOID leaving the TEE in line if you ever decide to use that Prestone ENGINE KILLER!
Do a search. Its proven at least two people I know (one is my brotyher) totalled an engine when the cap blew off of the damn things!

I have always had success running the engine at high RPM for a minute or two.

I made up a fitting for flushing the system. It a 1/2 pipe nipple (fits into the heater hose) with a gate valve and "garden hose" thread adaptor, works great.

Take off the cap, run the engine up to 3000 rpm's three times. Works everytime.

Follow the insrtuctions.....

The MB Engine Service Manual has a nice description of the cooling system, see 20-005.....please note that the system as described is self venting! Also, section 20-010 will explain the proper method of draining and filling the cooling system.

SB

Note: As I am most familiar with a 300D (but have owned a 240D), I checked that the manual is the same for both.....it is.....
