Strange Glow Plug light behavior

Hi All,

I did a search for the problem I'm about to describe, but didn't find anything that seems to be imediately relevent....

I went to a meeting I had thisevening and I seem to recall everything was normal when I started the car (for the first time today) to leave.

After the meeting was done, I went out to the car and expected to see the glow plug light come on and then go out again before I cranked the engine to try to start it.

The Glow plug light never came on with the key in the ON possition, so after staring at the dash for a few minutes, I went ahead and cranked the engine. The car started normally, but, after the motor was turning, the glow plug light came on.

Has anyone ever seen something like this before? If so, can you give me some clues as to what I should look at to make everything work like normal?

The short list of things I have to check is the glow plugs and the glow plug controller, but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for with the glow plug controller.

My car is a 1987 190D Turbo.

Thanks,

Paul

100% sure it's a bad glow plug, tou just have to find wich one!

Grab an ohmmeter and disconnect the connector from the glow plug relay,
than measure the resistence between each hole of the connector and the metal of the chassis, it should read a very low value like 10 ohm or so, the
one that reads a higher value like 150 ohm is the culprit for the behavior of the light. The connector has the number of the glow plugs so you know the one that is bad. i think this is how it's done, did it one time a couple of years ago, had 3 bad plugs and the engine still started well!!!!!!!

Good glow plugs will read about 0.6 ohms cold.
