what do all the monikers on our cars mean?

D TD SD SDL SL SEC etc...
I get the diesel for D
and I get the S class, but what does the S stand for?
how about the L in SxL vs. just SL?
and is TD for Touring Diesel? or is there a nice neat german word there?
John

off the top of my head...

sl - super light (or is it light roadster?)
slk - super light compact roadster?
clk - compact light roadster? (could be the fact the clk is based on the c-class platform)
s - saloon (4 door)
t - touring (wagon?)
d - diesel
sdl - saloon diesel longwheelbase
SEC - coupe based on s-class platform?

Hello "MCP, HVAC,GMAC & learning"

This is what I found on wikipedia (german):

D = Diesel (Dieselmotor)
E = Einspritzung (Ottomotor mit Benzineinspritzung)
K = Kompressor (SSK), bei neueren Modellen auch ausgeschrieben „Kompressor“
CDI = Common Rail Direct Injection (Dieselmotor mit Common-Rail-Einspritzung)
CGI = Stratified Charged Gasoline Injection (Ottomotor mit Direkteinspritzung)
NGT = Natural Gas Technology (Antrieb mit komprimiertem Erdgas (CNG))

C = Coupé
T = Transport & Touristik (Kombi)

L = verlängerter Radstand
S = S-Klasse (urspr. Sonder-Klasse)
SL = Sport-Leicht
SLK = Sport-Leicht-Kurz

I'll translate when I get back from work.

The number as you probably know originally represented the engine size (300 for 3.0 liters, 250 for 2.5 liters, etc), however, over here they didn't sell a 250D but a 300D 2.5 or a 300E 2.6, which really is a 260E.

S = Special
E = Einspitzung (gas injection)
D = Diesel
L = Lang (long wheelbase)
C = Coupe
T = Touring (wagon)
G = Geländewagen (off-road)
SL = Sports Leicht (sports-light)
Thus, a 560SEC would be an S-class-based coupe with a 5.6L fuel-injected engine, a 300SDL would be an long-wheelbase S-class with a 3.0L diesel, a 300CD would be a coupe with a 3.0L diesel, etc...

Note that in 1994 Mercedes swapped the numbers and letters, and most notably "E" no longer meant "Einspritzung" (there were both gas and diesel "E-classes"), instead it refers to the midsize car model, and "C" no longer meant "Coupe" (now we have sedan and wagon C-classes). "T" is no longer used but wagon models are still called "Touring" (eg E320 Touring).

The "K" in SLK and CLK could possibly stand for "kurz" (short)...eg, an SLK is a shorter (smaller) SL, and a CLK is a smaller CL.

Maybe the "S" in CLS refers to "sedan?" A sedan version of a coupe (CL-class)?

AMG = Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach (German for heart-stoppingly powerful)

C = Can't really afford an E
E = Everybody wants one
S = Substantial down payment required

From what I've read, Sonder-Klasse pretty much translates to "highest class" or something of that nature. E used to mean fuel injection, but now it really just signifies the E-class as all cars are fuel injected these days. You never saw an E on a diesel before 1994 (1995 in the US with the E300D) when MB changed their way of naming things. L seems to have two meanings, long wheelbase and light. I believe they stopped using the L for long wheelbase in 1994 as well, i.e. the W140 500SEL became the S500. The T was also dropped for wagons in 1994. The 300TE became just a standard E320. C also was changed into a class moniker, but it no longer exclusively adorns coupes. Your average C230 isn't a coupe...I really don't know why MB did this, since it still signifies that the CL and CLS are coupes

Allright, here's the translation:

D = Diesel (Dieselmotor) diesel engine (now, who would figured that one???)
E = Einspritzung (Ottomotor mit Benzineinspritzung) gasoline engine with fuel injection
K = Kompressor (SSK), bei neueren Modellen auch ausgeschrieben „Kompressor“ (gasoline engine with compressor, on later models spelled "Kompressor")
CDI = Common Rail Direct Injection (Dieselmotor mit Common-Rail-Einspritzung)
CGI = Stratified Charged Gasoline Injection (Ottomotor mit Direkteinspritzung)
NGT = Natural Gas Technology (Antrieb mit komprimiertem Erdgas (CNG))

C = Coupé
T = Transport & Touristik (Kombi) wagon

L = verlängerter Radstand elongated wheelbase
S = S-Klasse (urspr. Sonder-Klasse) originally 'special class' (like "not regular" or "uncommonly")
SL = Sport-Leicht sport light (like in pepsi light)
SLK = Sport-Leicht-Kurz sport-light-short (well, no comment on this one, it just sounds silly)

BTW: I like 2.5Turbo's interpretation.

Here's one straight from Germany: BMW = Bei Mercedes Weggeschmissen (Mercedes' rejects)
