Another smoke thread....

Hi all

I have been searching around for this and haven't come up with anything yet.

Here is my situation, my 69 220D smokes like crazy. Sitting at a red light, car in gear and foot on the brake it pumps a cloud out the tail pipe. And anytime you get on it going up a hill, it pumps a cloud out. However just idling in neutral, it produces no smoke and under most cruising conditions it does not smoke.

The engine produces enough power.....it keeps up on the freeway pretty well, even on the hills.

Oil consumption is low
Never did a compression test but it kicked right off during the winter when I needed to move it.

I have done a Diesel purge, no change in smoke.

I saw some posts about injectors but am not sure how to test them.

Any thoughts?

You have linkages out of whack..... if I'm not mistaken there is what might appear to be a throttle plate but actually isn't on the intake.

air filter is a oil bath filter.

I would suspect that it might be your injection pump timing out of spec due to the age of the motor.

Pull the injectors and have Sean Watts check and rebuild the ones that are not operating properly, he did a great job for me and many other members. His username on here is cseanwatts

Have you changed your fuel filters lately?
Did this just start?

This sounds like my car when I first got it. There was crap growing in the diesel from sitting. The pre fuel filter was getting clogged, causing lots of smoke. After cleaning out the tank, I still had too much smoke, I started using Heat to remove water from fuel, thought that would help, it did a tad. But still smoked like crazy, so much I did not want to drive it. I did put in some better fuel injectors and that helped. But still not perfect.

Before replacing body mounts and engine mounts I keep the idle up to keep everything from shaking, or put it in natural while stopped, to keep the smoking down. No drive threws for me.

Now I keep the idle down while in gear = less smoke it’s an automatic. And I also know how much to press the accelerator to not get the smoke, or get as much as I want.

Or you can just drive wide open most of the time to keep everything cleared out. This also helps keep the smoke down.
These are smoky cars.

Clean fuel, clean fuel filters, good spray pattern from injectors, and check everything everyone else said.
I did have Pierre replace something on the back of my injection Pump, not sure what it was. It did help.

I now have a car that smokes some and runs good.
These are smoky cars.

You may need to adjust the screw on the side of the injection pump for less fuel, forget about what I said above.
It sounds like you are getting to much fuel.
My book tells me to adjust this to reduce black smoke, while accelerating.

It's been like this since I got it.....I am just fed up with it now haha. Only did a visual on the fuel filters, they looked relatively new so I left them. Perhaps I will add that to my lift. I borrowed a copy of the service manual for my engine, I will see if it has any adjustments at the ip.

My advice to you is to change the filters and check your linkages (detailed in the FSM) before starting to mess about with the injector pump.

Don't try and jump more than one fence at a time.
