Can I burn used car oil in my furnace?

My father-in-law says he has changed his own oil for years. I asked him what he does with it. He takes it to the local mechanic. He has an oil burning furnace. Can he use his used car oil in the furnace? His car is not a deisel, so it is not as dirty as mine.

If the furnace is designed to burn waste oil, yes.

Local Dodge dealer has oil heat for winter and they use the shops used motor oil. I think it requires a different burner from standard oil burning furnance.

I'll advise him against it. He does not have any special setup or speical burner. Thanks for the help.

we had one at a shop I worked at when I was going to tech school, the thing was the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen, it would clog filters all the time and stop working, you would have to clean out the filters and the burner itself, I think they might work better if you are very careful what you put in the tank nothing to dirty with metal in it, nothing with antifreeze or water or anything like that. we ended up haveing to buy heating oil after that it worked ok but kinda defeed the purpose of having the thing

I have set up some waste oil burners at transmission shops, and small garages. they have a settling tank for the waste oil, and large filters on the burner pump, and special air stream nozzels for the burner itself. I would not recommend using anything other than transmission fluid occasionally in a home heating furnace.

Arrow Waste Oil Burner......

My friend owns "Down the Hole Pump Service", a welding, mechanical, and supply shop that caters to the Oil & Gas Industry in this area. He has a nice waste oil furnace, and that is where I dispose of all of my used motor oil. I can dump my used oils into his tank as long as there is no antifreeze in the oil. He has no problems, that I am aware of, with his setup.....

Burning used motor oil is a serious health hazard, be careful. This has been discussed here before and over at the biodiesel site.

I used to do this exact thing when I lived at home and also in a previous house (have electric heat now). The question is how much waste oil are you planning on burning? A standard home heating furnace will not tolerate straight motor oil or high percentages of it. However dumping 8 quarts into a 275 GALLON oil tank means less than 1% ratio. This the furnace can deal with. Obviously make sure that you have spare filters and the oil is free of antifreeze and water. I have friends in the HVAC biz so getting the furnace serviced was never an issue for me. The furnace will run a slight bit sootier with motor oil so cleaning and inspection is required. RT

Waste Oil Furnaces

My friend and Saab mechanic on Cape Cod bought a waste oil furnace to heat his shop, and set up a route to collect changed oil from gas stations. He used a little trailer, and needed several 55 gal drums for storage, but the furnace worked fine, at almost no cost. I seem to remember a big filter on the furnace just before the injector.

I had a waste oil heater, in one of my shops, years ago. It was exactly that.., a waste. The thing needed to be cleaned, and taken apart, and rebuilt, like twice a week, on a good weeks. It was also, constantly, going airbound, and there was nothing that could be done about it. I had many of the company's tech's come out, to work on, and service it, and from the very first day, to the very last day, it was junk. I always ran "good" oil through it, and sometimes even new, or diesel, or other fuels. It was supposed to be able to burn anything with petroleum in it. (Except for anti-freeze, or things of that nature) I will never, go near one again.
