Any other ideas? Could it be the injector pump or vacuum system? does the 240d have a device to recycle exhaust that I might have to check out? I really want to make sure my engine isn't wasting fuel, considering the prices these days ...

Have you done a valve adjustment? THIS was caused by a valve staying open causing a cylinder to not fire.

I got a valve adjustment just about 3,500 miles ago ... the video is great, though I don't think my smoke is quite that thick, it is most noticeable at night with a car's headlights behind me. And when I sit in the drivethru ...

When I start getting to much white smoke I find my fuel filters clogged, or water in them. I just started running B100 in my 220D, checked my filter 2 days ago, I found water in both of my filters. Now she does not smoke as much. At night you are allways going to see more smoke I was told.

My cars don't really appear to smoke at all, but at night in car headlights they all look like they are mosquito fogging. From all I hear that is very normal......

Re the poor shutdown good point about it being vacuum-related! This car clearly has terrible vacuum.

I'll go ahead & get the compression tool. What's the consensus on checking via the glow plugs or through the injectors?

Many thanks again!

Get the compression tester, but I would avoid Harbour Freight like the plague on these items! After a side by side comparison with the GOOD tool I bought at Napa auto parts, I will not trust the Chinese piece of shi* from Harbour Freight at all!

This is something you will need when owning and working on your diesels and you might as well get a good one for a few dollars more made in the USA! Were only talking about another $40 or so. The USA one is made by Stewart Warner and well worth it's price, it is made of quality parts designed for long life and accuracy.

I've heard similar ... but it shouldn't be visible with a hot engine in broad daylight or be thick enough in the drive thru that it burns my eyes, right?

In the summer I run her on B99 (B20 in winter). I just switched over about six weeks ago. I've looked at my clear fuel filter and everything looks OK, though I haven't changed either fuel filter since autumn. I think the engine is not burning all the fuel that it should, and I am wondering what I can do to improve it.
