I'd prefer some good pads, but cost is a problem for me. I'm currently running the $16 pads from AutoZone, one lesser known fact about AZ pads is that you can get FREE pads for life if you have the lifetime warrenty!

Repco metal master pads work out quite well in MB, have used them extensively in the 240D and now the 300D, they do have higher noise factor but have excellent stopping power over organics I had previously, they are harder on rotors but then braking is about being gentle unless emergency strikes, in that case, my brake pads on my MB or Gurkha last upward of 70,000 miles.

Brake pads

There are a some possible fixes for brake pad squeal:

1. Take them out & use a flat file to put a 45 degree edge on the pad
material.
2. Get a spray can of Permatex or other good brand "Disc Brake Quiet".
Spray a blob on the back of the pad & let it set up -- it will help
keep the pad from vibrating under load.
3. Clean the rotors and pad faces with brake clean.
4. Put a tiny bit of grease on the caliper rails where the pads will have
to slide in & out.
5. Clean your hands/change gloves before handling freshly cleaned parts
6. Best to do all the above.

It's the pad vibrating that squeals -- eliminate that & you're OK. I used to prefer cheap pads on my Saab because the harder ones always glazed because I didn't use them hard enough. On the other hand, my 240 stops beautifully & quietly ...... I believe the car had an (German immigrant) Indy brake job just before I bought it, and 50,000 miles later, the OEM (I'm sure) pads still look fine front & back.

I never have ANY rotors turned -- new rotors are not that much more. An ace Porsche mechanic changed my mind on that score -- convinced me it wasn't worth the risk of failure.

Braking power doesn't seem to be a problem for my car. The wheels lock and skid...

Mine is doing fine (only installed one side). Did you clean out the crap in the calipers? Does the pads go in easily and did you use the brake lube?

Autozone is great with their lifetime warranty. I have already brought in old pads, where they look up your phone number and find the record of your last purchase and give you a new set no questions asked. Same with lifetime suspension parts.

90% of the stopping power is on the front brakes. Even though the Autozone pads may not be the best of the best but that does not worry me much.

As for rotors, I have never had a set turned. If they are not warped, why turn them and make them thinner thus reducing its life?

After putting new pads on the grooved disk, the car stops fine, does not squeal or make any other noise, tracks straight in a panic stop. What more do I want?
