water temp sensor location

Does any anybody know where the temp. sensor is located for sending the signal to tempreture gauge in dash for 300D 1987 benz? I have discounected the sensor plug on engine block near thermostat but the temp is still showing in the dash. I disconnected the wires on top engines still shows the temp in the dash.

I have bought Cd's and a book called Mercedes Benz E class owner's bible but it does not say anything about it
Thanks,
Alan
