glow plug problems, 84 300D turbo

I've had problems with #3,#4 cylinder burning out glow plug. twice in about a year. first two I replaced wre from new set installed along with new type relay two & half years ago. put two good used ones in at that time, yesterday put two more used in, #3&4 again. coincidence or something wrong with relay, etc?? thanks for help, bill

What brand of glow plugs are you using?

The reason I ask is that several folks have mentioned much less than satisfactory life of Autolite and Champion. Those that have gone with Bosch replacements have reported much better results.

I may not be reading your question right, but it looks like you are putting in used plugs. why? new ones don't usually fail very often. carbon build up in the pc can cause premature GP failure.

Depending on the age and miles of the head, you should ream out the gp holes before you put the new ones in. The carbon build up can burn them out. I wonder, too, if there is a way to switch the leads to 3 and 4 with say 1 and 2 and see if you get the same results. Just a thought, though, I've never tried or contemplated that before.
