Driveshaft support bearing looks different

84 300D.... the support bearing looks different. It seems to be mounted on a piece of metal that flares out on each side of the bearing. I don't see any clips that hold it in place....

The replacement bearing I got is just a plain bearing....

2nd pic shows part of bushing around bearing, tore off main bushing shown infront of spline...

I'm also wondering if I should bother replacing the bearing... it appears to be fine....

I had my shaft inspected by betten imports last year due to vibration, all they found was that the large nut on the middle of the shaft was loose and tightened it, vibration went away. They said the carrier and bearing were fine and replacement was not necessary, they also said the flex discs looked fine.

The replacement is just a bearing, that must just be what it mounts into. I have one too....its just a plain bearing assembly.

The later ones, sometime in 82 switched to a center bearing without a clip and it has hard covers on each side of the bearing. The bearing is just the bearing on the shaft. The carrier is the part that holds the bearing and mounts to the car, it has a rubber douhnut type deal to absorb vibrations and allow the shaft to move around alittle. The carrier is mounted facing in different directions depending on the year. Replace the bearing if there is any question about its condition or it just plain old. they are cheap and you don't want to pull it out again just to do the bearing.

That is a collar that slides up against the bearing.

Interesting, my '83 has a "C" clip. Anycase, you should be able to remove that collar by prying with a screw driver.

Yup, got it done... its just a collar that keeps the bearing in place. Its on both sides of the bearing. No clip... bought the clip pliers for nothing..

Used a 3-jaw puller from AZ to pull old bushing and bearing out separately. Bushing first then bearing.

put a new mount/bushing. Trick is to tap bearing into bushing mount first, then tap bearing/mount into shaft - not bearing to shaft without mount. Used old bearing to tap new one in.

Greased splines, lined it up and shoved it in.
