thermostat seal(s)

I just got my new thermostat from ********az, and it looks exactly like the one pictured below, with two gaskets and all. Problem is, I can figure out where the second o-ring (the one without the nipple) goes. Anyone know?

I dropped mine in my spare parts bin. Manual I have didn't show anything to do with it, so I figured it must have been for a different car than mine.

Different engines use different gaskets for the same thermostat. (For example, some have a bypass and some don't.) So, to avoid having multiple part numbers because of the gaskets, the mfg just includes gaskets for multiple applications. Use the gasket that fits and forget about the ones that don't.
