83 TD Sunroof question

Greetings all,

My electronic sunroof opens beautifully but will not close. It makes an effort to do so by moving about a half an inch before the motor starts making a buzzing/grinding sound.

Could this be a serious issue? Im hoping it is a result of crud buildup.

Any input greatly appreciated

Nathaniel

hi,
you might want to clarify the vehicle you have. The TD was a station wagon and has a manual sunroof, no electric. Do you mean a "D" or i have seen it as "DT"? Just trying to make it easier for folks to help you diagnose the problem. Mike

Thanks Mike...

so this would be the 83 300D Turbo Diesel sedan with an electric sunroof. Grinding sound seems to be coming from the motor only when its attempting to close. I sincerely doubt the tracks have ever been cleaned and Ive only had it a year. Is there a grease that works as well as that which u can get from the MBZ dealer that I could get at a pep boys or someplace? Im considering taking it apart.

Thx

hi,
i have never had a problem with any of the sunroofs in any of the benz i own but what you could try is to first degrease the tracks good. get all that 23 year old grease out of there. Then have someone hold the switch and help the sunroof to close. open again and repeat. Try doing a search under sunroof grease or sunroof lubricant and maybe that will give you a substitute. hth mike

also might want to try adjusting the clutch on the sunroof motor. when i first got my 300D turbo, i opened the roof, the guy said that the sunroof was slow. when i got home and tryed closing it, it was stuck. turns out the clutch needed to be tightened (not over tightened). and now it is very fast and opens and closes no problem.

Clean tracks, and adjusting the clutch will help. My '84 300D did the same thing, when I test drove it. The car lot dropped the price by $700.00 on the spot.
