what is the best oil?

Hello I am wondering what is the best oil to use on my newly acquired 1995 E300 diesel. The owners manual only says to ask a certified Mercedes center, can someone give me some information on conventional and synthetic and change intervals. Thanks JO

Well, of course it is Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40. You can't just walk into an auto parts store and get it, but it's worth the trouble

The best oil.........hmmmmm. It depends. Are we talking brand or weight? Do you plan to change oil regularly and frequently? If so, it doesn't matter, IMHO, what brand you use as long as its the correct weight and you change oil and filter on schedule.

I use Rotella 15w-40 and sometimes SuperTech. I've always liked Castrol but can't seem to find 15W-40 as easily. Can't justify synthetic. I change every 3000 miles.

diesel oil chemistries such as API CI-4 are superior to MB229.5 in terms of their protection from the byproducts of diesel combustion, etc. That said, Ive analyzed the HD MB specs, such as 228.3 and 228.5, and they are nearly identical. As such, I woud strive to use a 228.3 or 228.5 spec diesel oil, rahter than the 229.x oils, which tend to have a few other issues, which are seen in used oil analysis, and also which do not have ans much capacity to disperse soot.

That said, I would consider mobil delvac 1 (a.k.a. mobil1 turbo diesel truck 5w-40) and schaeffer's 9000 5w-40 a tie for first place.

Second place Id consider rotella synthetic 5w-40.

As far as conventional oils go, chevron delo is the best one out there, but one of the big three are far apart. With the addition of molybdenum in the additive package of delo 400, chevron gave its oil a nice boost in capability and AF/AW protection, thus making it squeak by a bit higher, IMO.

I'd use Rotella 15w-40 non-synthetic.

I'd do a 5,000 interval but I'm unfamiliar with the '95, your owners book may recommend a different interval. Dino oil probably ought to be changed at 5,000 or thereabouts regardless of the car's idea.

My father's 96 is specced for 7500 mile OCI. Used oil analysis shows the soot loading at well under 1% (0.7% IIRC), and wear metals relatively low. Likely 10-15k miles is acceptable, but you always must verify by using used oil analysis and professional interpretation first.

I stand corrected on the interval, that sounds good

I believe this has been renamed Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40, which is what I use in my 300D. It is available at Auto Zone for $5.99 quart.
