Diesel Engine Books

Since this is the forum where everyone is working on their diesel engines or trying to figure how to troubleshoot it, I thought I would post some of my favorite diesel engine books. Please add your favorite diesel engine books to this thread.

Factory Manual: You can't beat having a set of the factory manuals on hand to get the information directly from the "Creators" on how your MB should run and be maintained. http://www.mercedesmanuals.com/?gclid=CJWl7cnv0osCFR5ShgodjCvYVQ

Haynes Mercedes-Benz Diesel 123 series covering 1976 thru 1985 (200D, 220D, 240D, 240TD, 300D, 300CD and 300TD). If you don't have the factory manuals then this is probably the next best one to have on hand for maintenance and repair. These are pretty easy to find in the US to purchase. http://www.amazon.com/Mercedes-Benz-Diesel-Automotive-Repair-1976-1985/dp/0856966975/ref=sr_1_3/103-0358871-1600649?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177125808&sr=1-3

"Troubleshooting & Repairing Diesel Engines" by Paul Dempsey. Published by TAB books for Mcgraw Hill. This is a soft bound book about 378 pages long covering the fundamental operation of the diesel engine. It has an entire chapter dedicated to diagnosis. I paid $25.00 at Borders Books. http://www.amazon.com/Troubleshooting-Repairing-Diesel-Engines-Dempsey/dp/0070163480/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/103-0358871-1600649?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177125686&sr=1-3

"Diesel Technology Fundamentals/Service/Repair” by GW Publisher. This book is laid out like a tech school text books with a quiz at the end of every chapter. It covers all kind of diesel engines. Even the 2 stoke variety. This book has a lot of good pictures and sketches. http://www.amazon.com/Diesel-Technology-Fundamentals-Service-Repair/dp/1590707702/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0358871-1600649?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177125686&sr=1-1

The 6.2L/6.5L Diesel Trouble Shooting Guide” Published by Jim’s Electronics and can be purchased through the Diesel page. Even though this trouble shooting guide is tailored for the GM 6.2/6.5L, It covers the fundamentals in diagnosing problems with diesel engines. http://www.thedieselpage.com/trouble.htm

Automotive Air Conditioning Basic Service Manual” published by Mastercool. If you want to do your own AC repair and diagnosis, then this is a good manual to start with. This books steps you through a lot of different scenarios in diagnosing and what you may see on a set of guages. http://www.acsource.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8

Here's what you do if it's so cold your diesel fuel gels. Smear some on some toast and stay inside until it warms up outside.

Thanks for the links.

When I had my '91, I bought all of the manuals when it went out of warranty, but it was a gas 124 / 300TE 4matic. Now I have two diesel 124s, and can't find the factory 602/603 manuals for any decent price. I watch ebay constantly, when one shows up it goes for more than I paid for my manual new, ... good to have an alternative.

I do have the factory CDs, not the same as having the print version.

Thumbs down Haynes Manual

In my opinion the Haynes Manuals are just generic DIY books......I would not waste my money, unless perhaps you don't have access to the other manuals mentioned.......

MBUSA offers a selection of Technical Literature for various models.....
http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/index.do
Just click the link, mouse over "Classic Center" and select Technical Literature, it will open a page where you can enter the year and model of your car.....

Model 123 Service Manual Library.....$19.99....a 2 CD set containing all of the MB Service Manuals (Engine, Electrical Troubleshooting, Maintenance, Owners, Climate Control, Chassis & Body) for all years and models of the W123......unfortunately they are in an older version of Adobe .pdf....but they are exact duplicates of the printed books that sell for better than $50 each on e-Bay......but you can print out whatever pages are currently of interest, get them greasy and toss them when done.....

Technical Data Passenger Cars.....$29.99.....a small book of 510 pages, designed and printed for an MB Service Tech to keep in the toolbox as a quick reference.....not a repair manual, but contains a wealth of info not found elsewhere......

also of note.....Mercedes Benz Technical Companion (Bentley Publishing)...covers many different body styles and engines.....lots of useful info....got mine from Amazon for around $25.....

and if you really want to know about Diesel Engines in general.......the absolute best book is.....
Diesel Motor Ships Engines and Machinery, Christian Knak.....quite expensive, 2 volume set......
and
Diesel Engine Reference Book, LRC Lilly, Butterworths........covers everything from History and Theory to Diagnostics and Maintenance.....
Diesel Engineering Handbook, Karl W. Stinson, Business Journals Inc......the premier textbook on Diesels....
Marine Diesel Lubrication, G.H. Clark.....everything you ever wanted to know about Lube Oil....and then some...
Diesel and High Compression Engines Fundamentals, Edgar J. Kates, American Technical Society....good book for the fledgling Diesel Engineer....
