Question fan clutch replacement

I have a 95 E300D. I just got a new fan clutch and I'm stumped on how to take the old one off. Is it just the clip that holds it on? any help would be great. Its a tight spot and hard to see anything.

tools

you'll need a tool that holds the body of the clutch while you remove the bolt that holds the body of the clutch to the water pump shaft. Search this forum and you'll see the pics of the tools. What symptoms do you have that make you think the clutch is not working?

the car was getting very hot in traffic and its only 50 deg out. the fan looks like it moves slower than the engine while the car is at idol. and I think the fan clutch has 300,000 miles on it.

I'm not too sure of the similarities between '95 and '99 but this link my help you out: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OM606ViscousFan

excellent post

This is an excellent how-to post. I think my fan clutch is going too. Spins around a bit after shutdown. However, after reading numerous posts here about fan clutches, I'm still unsure how to tell if the clutch is shot. There are people who feel very differently about what constitutes a bad fan clutch.

You can get a pretty good idea four ways that I know of:

1) Spins for more than 3 seconds after shutdown. My new one stops before you can say, "One- Mississippi."

2) Evidence of fluid leakage from clutch. (lots of sand stuck to clutch body)

3) Temp gauge deflection suddenly higher than normal at idle. (tipoff for me in my case).

4) This one I haven't observed but have heard about: After car has warmed up, shut it down and TAPE a fanblade to the radiator shroud with one piece of ducttape. Immediately restart. If fan rips tape loose, clutch is still fuctioning, if not, it's just freewheeling.
