That's clean

Thank's uberwgn, I am impressed.

I have been trying to get my 84 engine bay clean for the past year. Simple green has done a good job of getting the oil/dirt off, so I am no longer dirty after working on the car. I still have a surface coating of dirt that does not come off. That is until I changed out my fuel lines recently and spilled some veggie oil on the engine bay paint. Cleaned the dirty coating off, down to the white paint. So if diesel does not work for you, try some wesson oil. Followed by simple green, as a film of oil (diesel or veggie) will attract dirt, thus requiring another cleaning cycle.

Try silicone spray lubricant. Great degreaser and is fantastic on the hoses and plastic.

Mercury, I agree. The last thing I'm going to clean an engine with is a product that leaves a new greasy/oily coating that's going to accumulate dirt and dust like mad! It's my objective to clean with a no-residue product.

Oven cleaner. Just don't leave it long.
Does a wonderful job of taking it right down to the metal. Paint included.

Yes, and including a nice layer of corrosion to boot.

(I've seen the damage this stuff can do, especially to aluminum.)

Yes, it's a little more caustic than Simple Green.

Diesel sucks as a "de-greaser". Biodiesel is an excellent degreaser however, as well as the other things mentioned, like Simple Green or products specifically for engine de-greasing.
