Mercedes specializes in bad a/c's

If your a/c is not working, then all is well with your Mercedes. That's just the way they're made. Could be the regulator or the fan, or a myriad of other items.

On my W124, I can test the fan by replacing the regulator. If the fan works, then the original regulator was bad. If the fan doesn't work, then it could be the fan itself doesn't work, or other things causing it to not work. If you put power directly to the fan modules, circumventing everything else, then if the fan doesn't work, it's definitely the fan that's messed up. Get a new fan, repeat the process to see if the original regulator is working or not.

Good luck,

Aux fan When does it come on?

When does the aux fan come on ? When the AC is switched on? When the radiator reaches a certain temp.? Where is the sensor located? Thanks in advance>

The fan kicks on by the temp sensor on the receiver/dryer. It should also be turned on by the coolant temp sensor.
Like was stated before try jumping power directly to the fan and see if it works.

This however doesn't answer your original question. What are your high and low side pressures?

High and low side pressure? I thought all one had to do was go to Auto Zone and purchase the 134A parking lot install kit and let 'er rip. Who cares about pressure, exploding hoses and other casualties of hacking the AC system.
Maybe the belt is missing, maybe the compressor locked up and broke the belt, maybe there is a leak, maybe the fuse is blown, maybe the switches on the drier are bad, maybe you should take it to an indy who is capable to repairing MB AC systems.

Might be the gold chain around the license plate. Oh wait... that's on your Mustang. That thing makes more noise than a nailing 617.

The whole thing is bad

The whole a/c system is bad on a Mercedes. Bad fans, bad regulators, bad components, bad flappers, bad freon lines, etc. I think the lines on a Mercedes are metal, when the japs went with the better choice of aluminum. Jap a/c's will basically throw ice cubes at you, very good for here in the south. Mercedes, even when working well, just don't cool that well. Barely adequate.

MB should have offered a cheap fix for their poor design, but they never did.

I can certainly agree with you that MB climate control systems are absurdly complex and prone to failure but I totally disagree with your comment about them being "barely adequate".

The climate control system in my 91 300D will maintain the cabin temperature +/- 1 degree from the temperature setting on the dial. On a hot summer day it will also bring down the interior temperature from 125F to a comfortable level in 5-6 minutes. I don't see how you could expect much more, from a performance perspective, than this. Are the Japanese or American systems any better?

If your system is not capable of this kind of performance I suspect something is wrong - no real surprise there eh?

Im the last guy to be giving AC advice but here are some simple first steps before you go buying gear and spending time reading up on fixing.
Step one. Check the fuses. Even if they are not blown wiggle any relevant fuses in their place because they corode and make poor contact sometimes.

Next. Start the car and pop the hood. Have a helper sit in the driver seat and switch back and forth between the a/c button and the economy button on the climate control.
If its hot out and engine is warm you should hear an audible difference in sound up front within a few moments of pushing the ac button on the dash.
The noise will be the compressor turning on.
Compressor is on one of the belts up front. Probably on the driver side down low. You can probably visually see if the front part in front of the pully is spinning and not spinning when you switch back and forth from vent and ac switches on the dash.
If it appears that it is not turning on and all fuses are fine the next step is to crawl under (engine off) and look closely at the wires coming into the bottom. The plug there takes a lot of abuse and can come out or wires rip. I found mine to have a bad connection there on more than one occasion.
