Google search reveals 59 to 68 mph as the estimated speed of the crash.

It was also claimed that the vehicle had a digital speedometer when in fact, it was a computer actuated analog speedometer. Lots of speculation.

Princess Di facts
God, some real poor memories here, hopefully mine isn't totally gone. The car was not going 150 mph, Henry the driver was not ok, etc., etc.
1) The car hit the cement barrier at 122 mph. It's my understanding Mercedes makes the needle so it stays stuck when an impact occurs. That way they know for sure how fast someone was going, and they can't lie to the police, saying "Honest officer, I was only going 55 mph!" 2) Everyone died except for the body guard who was wearing a seatbelt. Princess Di was seated over by Dodi, who was on the driver's side. Had she been in her own seat, she'd probably have been better off, even without a seatbelt. It's rumoured that the drunk driver, Henry, tipped off the paparazzi before he left the hotel, basically selling Princess Diana out, telling them which car they'd be in, and where they'd come out, for $500. After the crash, Henry's head was forward on the steering wheel, causing the horn to blow constantly. Drunk driving, at 122 mph, with no seatbelts? I'm sorry, but they asked to die. They gambled with death, and lost. They should have known to wear their belts. Princess Di didn't die right away. They called an ambulance who came, and they told the ambulance to drive slow, as going over the bumps was risky for the ailing Princess. They don't know if more bumps would have killed her, or lack of speed getting to the hospital killed her. jeff jeff |

If I can remember correctly she suffered from an aortic rupture. Going over bumps in an ambulance would not have made a difference. Getting her to the OR and cross-clamping it as soon as possible might have made a difference.

They are all extremly safe cars. A Mercedes S class is a good choice regardless of the generation, buy the newest you can afford if safety is the main concern. As time progresses more and more safety features are added and things are improved.
So the safest would be the new W221.

I think the 95 E300 is sitll one of Consumer Reoprt's " Best Cars Ever". Here you get the pass side air bag ( but no glove box), and a good anti-lock system.
