front steering shimmy

hi guys, well i have been dealing with this for some time, i have a vibration and shimmy in my steering wheel that starts mysteriously at 65 and is pretty annoying at 70 but diminishes from there. now i have adjusted the steering box, the tires are balanced and the wheels and tires are true but there is no change.

any ideas? i have done extensive searching here. i am considering that i have the wrong speed rated tires (i have T's (hydroedges), a friend says i should have H's at least and the MB spare is a V) or a bad alignment...OH YEA, i have a slightly wider tire on there 205's instead of 195's.

id apprecite any ideas, see my sig for car specs, i have had this problem for years, i thik i have always had this problem?

BTW, i am building a pop tester for my injectors, like the kind i saw here (its a project for now) and i had dismantled a vacuum pump to find an oil leak in it, i plan to post pictures of it dismantled (this is with the front pressed on cover removed, it is an old style pump)

The shimmy on my car actually came from bad wheel bearings on the driver side. The race had a low spot, but you could not get the wheel to move laterally, but you could feel and hear it when driving.

Have you checked the condition of your control arm bushings?

Two comments.

Wheels are balanced is open to debate. If it were me I would find a shop with the Hunter GSP9700 and have the front wheels balanced (or all 4). Specify plastic weights , not stick on weights. Believe me when they are done your wheels have been checked for out of round, and the tires are really balanced. www.gsp9700.com Find a dealer routine.

Then you have to have someone who knows how to do it, check the front suspension components, bearing play, balljoints, control arm bushings (probably toast), tie-rods, idler arm bushing, etc. Fix what's wrong and on you go.

If the vibration is speed dependent, then you could try swapping tires front to rear to determine whether it's a tire issue.

A couple of possibility:

A wheel out of balance or a damaged tire can be easily checked by rotating wheels from front to back.

Have the alignment checked and look for worn suspension/steering components. My 240D recently had a shimmy due to a bad tie rod end.

It is a bad (insert steering component here). if you don't know how to check the steering components, you should take the car to an alignment shop and have them tell you what is worn out.
