Injector Sizes [SOLVED]

I have bought new injectors for my n/a 1980 300d and am starting to remove and replace them. However, the 1-1/16 socket that fits the new injectors is too small for the old ones. Everything I have read says that the injectors are the same size on all the 617 engines, and I bought the new ones specifically for my engine number. I don't want to go buy a new socket and yank them just to find out I need different size crush washers, etc. Do I have the wrong injectors?

Exclamation 1 1/16" fits an '85 300D Injectors......

I thought all of the injectors were the same physical size on all 617.xxx motors.....but not all deepwell sockets clear the spigots (for lack of a better word) that the leak-off lines connect to......

Those inj's really take a 27mm (1.0630") socket vs the 1.0625" you are attempting to use. It is a "very" small difference.

Perhaps the inside of your socket has debris in it and needs to be cleaned out?

hmm. get an open end wrench and verify what size the body of the injectors are. should be the same. 1-1/16 deep should work on all injectors, but actually, they make a socket that has grooves in it for clearance of the return line fittings.

Are you saying they are a little off or a lot off? Or is there some other obstruction causing it to not fit?

Your 1 1/16 socket is a metric equivalant of 26.9875mm, slightly small, but it should be OK unless the old ones are slightly oversize due to grime or rust or something.

Maybe try fitting a 27mm or 1 1/16 open-end on one of them for size so you can see what exactly is obstructing?

I have a 27mm deep socket and I used a air die grinder to cut out the slots for the return line pipes. it worked well.

They were the right injectors.

It turns out that the shoulder on the inside of the socket was interfering with the return line nipples. Squeezing them a little with pliers helped get the socket on. I was a little disappointed because I bough the socket specifically from one of the well-known diesel mechanics online and it was supposed to work without problem.

I think I bought some of the last injectors on earth, they all seem to be sold out now. I bought them from Autohauz for $38/piece and they have totally eliminated my nailing issues. I am taking my first road trip today from Cincinnati to Nashville and am interested to see how my mileage is now.
