When a W126 is 100%, they will "glide" along the road and around corners. You will not particularly care how much power is underhood for you are mesmerized by the awesome ride quality and hushed exhaust note.

If you still want extra performance, the OM60x engines are good to play with if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, and willing to spend a little $$$$.
I have a couple of them. they need some work now and then indeed. apart from the shocks I rebuilt the front end of my SDL and it still clunks. and the rear sags which looks ghetto. it drives magnificent though. not very much a race car handling wise, but a nice cruiser.

most heavy cars don't though, if alignment, suspension and tires are tight.

Must be something with your W126's. My front suspension doesn't clunk, and the rear end of my SDL does not sag.

I have driven every S class since the W126, W140, and W220. No W221 yet. They all drive like they are on rails, the W140 handles and rides better then the W126. With a W140 S600 you can set the cruise at 150, and sit back and have a conversation on the cell with no issues. Its a very anticlimatic event.

I have only seen a handfull of French cars since they havn't imported them into this country in like 30 years. I would never buy a French car anyway.

Yeah, me too.

I think you'd be flying off the road if you try to combine those two actions. At 150mph, you're glued to watching the road, I've been there! (155mph on the autobahn) I was in a C220cdi wagon, 6 speed manual. Quite an experience.

Your cell conversation would probably also be mostly about where the next fuel station was...since you'd have about 35-40 mins per fillup at that speed.

Its called a headset, no need to remove your hands from the wheel. Talking via a headset is like talking to someone sitting next to you. Verizon offers them at pretty reasonable prices.

At that speed your concentration doesn't really have room for talking period, via headset, or even to the person next to you.

Sounds like a bet to me...

But yeah its pretty fast, the difference between something sane like 90 and 150 is pretty great.

Yup, that feels pretty fast, the only time I've driven close to that speed in on a track in a 911. You do want to be paying attention to what you're doing (especially in a 70s vintage 911). BTW, driving 100+ mph on a motorcycle feels even faster (cheap thrills).

that intrigues me. why would you never buy a french car? based on what?
I'll never buy an american car, based on the fact that they're engineered to break.
maybe my 126's are just perfect, but I'm used to a tighter car than the 126...
and I've seen many saggy sdl's. it's not uncommon.

I'd be seriously questioning the capability of the W-140 to handle the pavement irregularities at 150..........you won't be doing any talking on a phone........that's for sure.

A few months ago, my brother brought one of the SLK's home with the 500 hp engine. We took it over to the beach across the causeway.........up to 120 for most of the stretch. I wasn't doing any talking on any phone.........the vehicle and the pavement required all my concentration. 150 would have been ridiculous on that road.

Hey Hatteras Guy,

I have a 1997 E 320 and an 83 300SD, and I swear that the SD is a more comfortable and better riding vehicle. I have considered purchasing an SDL....In your opinion, is the SDL leaps and bounds ahead of the 300SD?.......Is the difference like night and day or should I just hold on to my old 300SD?

Thanks in advance!
